Novartis, a worldwide pharmaceutical innovator, is expanding its research portfolio in Basel, Switzerland. The company seeks a Research Scientist II to join its single‑cell and spatial omics unit. The position focuses on applying next‑generation sequencing and spatial transcriptomics to deepen insight into disease mechanisms and support therapeutic discovery. It is an onsite role in Basel; applicants must be locally accessible as relocation assistance is not offered. Daily tasks include designing, testing and implementing new NGS protocols, with a focus on single‑cell RNA‑sequencing and multimodal spatial applications. The scientist will independently run experiments, process data, and generate FAIR‑compliant reports. Collaboration with wet‑lab and bioinformatics teams is essential to interpret complex sequencing outputs and turn them into actionable project insights. Regular presentations of methods and results to internal stakeholders are also required. Applicants need a Master's degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Life Sciences or a related field, plus one to two years of industry experience in genomics, in‑situ hybridisation, imaging or spatial techniques. Demonstrated hands‑on expertise with advanced molecular technologies, especially NGS workflows, is mandatory, as is strong proficiency in nucleic‑acid extraction, PCR/qPCR and library preparation. Experience handling challenging clinical samples such as FFPE tissue, primary tumour cells or low‑input material is required. Candidates should have a proven record of developing and refining experimental methods, conducting experiments autonomously, analysing data rigorously and communicating findings clearly. Effective collaboration across matrix teams is also essential. Novartis values clear communication and fluency in English, and looks for individuals who actively build professional networks and thrive in a dynamic, inclusive environment where they own their contributions. Experience with single‑cell and spatial transcriptomics platforms is a desirable addition. The role offers flexible and hybrid working options where feasible, at least 14 weeks of paid parental leave, performance‑based bonuses, potential equity awards and a comprehensive benefits package covering insurance, retirement and wellbeing resources. Basel provides a vibrant scientific community and state‑of‑the‑art facilities. What the role asks for: - Master's degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related field - 1–2 years industry experience in genomics and spatial techniques - Proven hands‑on experience with advanced NGS workflows - Strong skills in nucleic acid extraction, PCR/qPCR and library prep - Experience handling FFPE tissue, primary tumor or low‑input samples - Demonstrated ability to develop and refine experimental methods - Independent experiment execution, data evaluation and reporting - Excellent collaboration across matrix teams - Nice‑to‑have: fluency in English and strong communication skills - Nice‑to‑have: experience with single‑cell and spatial transcriptomics platforms - Nice‑to‑have: proactive network building and accountability mindset
