Technical Development Scientist

Roche is looking for a highly motivated Senior or Principal Scientist to join its Particle Design section in Basel, Switzerland. The role sits within the crystallization and solid‑state development teams of the small‑molecule organization, where the company’s mission is to prevent, stop and cure disease while ensuring broad access to healthcare. In this position you will design, optimise and scale crystallisation, precipitation and isolation processes under both non‑GMP and cGMP conditions, aiming for target purity, crystal form and particle attributes. You will define commercial design spaces, act as the technical bridge between synthetic chemistry, analytical development, formulation and production, and drive digital innovation using advanced modelling tools. Responsibilities also include preparing technical reports, manufacturing instructions and regulatory filing sections, as well as leading matrix collaborations with internal teams, vendors and academic partners to solve complex CMC challenges. The ideal candidate holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, physical chemistry, materials science, pharmaceutical science or a related discipline with up to five years of pharma experience, or an M.Sc. with at least seven years in the field. Proven expertise in end‑to‑end small‑molecule crystallisation, filtration, drying and purification, together with a solid foundation in solid‑state chemistry and polymorphism, is essential. Practical experience with powder characterisation, wet/dry milling, spray drying, precipitation or process/molecular modelling is required, as is demonstrated project‑management and matrix‑leadership ability. Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory. Additional assets include a working knowledge of German, prior experience authoring regulatory filing documents, and a strong affinity for digitalisation to enhance process efficiency.
