Roche is a company dedicated to preventing, stopping, and curing diseases, ensuring access to healthcare. The Machine Learning Scientist role is within the AI Biology & Translation (AIBT) team, which focuses on applying state-of-the-art artificial intelligence to accelerate biomedical discovery. The team works on projects like target discovery, disease understanding, biomarker development, and translational science. The main responsibilities involve leading sequence design campaigns, translating biological questions into predictive and generative models, and driving iterative sequence optimization. This includes building, training, and fine-tuning machine learning algorithms, designing candidate sequence libraries, and analyzing experimental readouts. The role also involves collaborating with wet-lab scientists, presenting technical findings, and staying updated with advancements in biological sequence modeling. To qualify, candidates must have a Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline with 0-4 years of post-doctoral or industry experience. Strong Python programming skills and proficiency in deep learning frameworks like PyTorch are essential. Experience in developing, training, or fine-tuning sequence-to-function models for biological molecules, preferably DNA/RNA, is required. Excellent communication skills in English are also necessary. Nice-to-have skills include prior experience in a biotech, pharma, or industry setting, and domain knowledge in nucleic acid-based therapeutics. Familiarity with advanced ML frameworks relevant to sequence design, such as generative modeling, and experience with high-throughput functional genomics data processing are also beneficial. The AIBT team is part of the Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CS-CoE) and works on cutting-edge AI to accelerate biomedical discovery and translational science. The team integrates expertise in machine learning, computational biology, and software engineering. What the role asks for: - Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline (Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Machine learning, or a related field) - 0-4 years of post-doctoral or industry experience - Strong Python programming skills - Proficiency in deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch - Hands-on experience developing, training, or fine-tuning sequence-to-function models for biological molecules (preferably DNA/RNA) - Excellent communication skills in English - Nice-to-have: Prior experience applying machine learning in a biotech, pharma, or industry setting
