Automation Engineer - PLC & UX, Process Automation (all genders)

RHI Magnesita, the worldwide leader in refractories that equips steel, cement and glass producers with high‑temperature solutions, is looking for an Automation Engineer within its PLC & UX Controls, Process Automation pool. The role focuses on creating future‑ready automation capabilities for the company’s Competence Center, turning engineering concepts into modular, reusable platforms that can be deployed across regions and throughout a product’s life. Each day you will build and sustain PLC‑based control systems for machines, intelligent handling equipment and process‑automation projects, while also crafting user‑friendly HMI and UX designs that promote safe, efficient operation. You will shape functional concepts, define interfaces and develop reusable software blocks, convert business and customer needs into technical specifications, and assess external technologies and software components to advise on integration or make‑or‑buy choices. Supporting testing, commissioning, documentation and ongoing improvement across the product lifecycle is also part of the routine. The position requires a university degree in automation, electrical, mechatronics, computer science, systems engineering or a comparable technical discipline, together with hands‑on PLC programming experience in machinery, plant engineering or heavy industry. You should be familiar with standard PLC development tools and IEC 61131‑3 languages, understand industrial communication, machine interfaces and system integration, and be ready to travel occasionally. Fluency in English is mandatory; German or other languages are a plus. Additional assets include work with Siemens TIA Portal, Beckhoff TwinCAT, B&R Automation Studio, CODESYS or similar platforms, knowledge of protocols such as Profinet, EtherCAT, OPC UA or MQTT, and exposure to safety PLCs, simulation, robotics, cybersecurity or modular machine architecture.
