The Controls and Automation Engineer role is within the Cooling & Ventilation (CV) Group at CERN, focusing on enhancing the energy efficiency and performance of cooling systems, air conditioning, and fluid distribution networks. The CV Group is responsible for the design, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of these critical systems, which support CERN's accelerator complex, experimental areas, and strategic technical infrastructures. The main day-to-day responsibilities include developing and validating dynamic simulation models of HVAC, cooling, ventilation, and hydraulic systems. This involves assessing plant performance and evaluating energy optimization opportunities. The engineer will also design, test, and implement control system improvements, including advanced control strategies, to enhance energy efficiency, reliability, and operational stability. Additionally, the role requires applying data analytics, Machine Learning, and neural network techniques to support performance monitoring, fault detection, and process optimization. The engineer will manage the deployment, testing, commissioning, and performance verification of selected process, control, and AI-based solutions on operational production plants. Technical studies, engineering recommendations, and performance assessments will also be produced, with collaboration with operations and maintenance teams to ensure successful implementation of improvements. To qualify for this role, candidates must have experience in modelling and simulation of physical systems (HVAC, hydraulic, thermal, or industrial processes) using tools such as EcosimPro, Matlab/Simulink, or similar platforms. Experience in the design, implementation, testing, and commissioning of industrial control systems is also required, with knowledge of advanced control techniques being an asset. Additionally, experience in data analysis and software development using Python is necessary, with familiarity with data analytics, machine learning, or artificial intelligence libraries being an advantage. Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French. Nice-to-have skills include familiarity with PLC Programming & Automation using Siemens Step7, TIA Portal, and/or Schneider EcoStruxure Control Expert. The role is based at CERN, which offers a dynamic and inclusive work environment. The position involves work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations, requiring a valid driving licence. The contract duration is 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months, and the working hours are 40 hours per week, fully onsite. What the role asks for: - Experience in the modeling and simulation of physical systems (HVAC, hydraulic, thermal or industrial processes) with tools such as EcosimPro, Matlab/Simulink or similar platforms. - Experience in the conception, implementation, test and commissioning of industrial control systems. - Experience in data analysis and software development with Python. - A Bachelor- or Master degree in Automation and Controls (or a related field). - A maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. - Citizenship of a CERN member or associated member state. - A valid driver's license. - Knowledge in advanced control techniques is an advantage.
