The Controls and Automation Engineer role at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, involves working within the Engineering Department, specifically the Cooling and Ventilation Group and the Controls Section. CERN is renowned for its groundbreaking research in particle physics, using advanced technologies to explore the fundamental structure of the universe. The Controls and Automation Engineer will focus on the design, development, and maintenance of industrial control systems that support CERN's cooling and ventilation installations. The main day-to-day responsibilities include defining control system requirements and producing functional specifications, selecting and applying control and automation strategies, and designing, developing, testing, and validating PLC application software. The engineer will also configure, test, commission, maintain, and upgrade industrial control systems, collaborate with various stakeholders, and manage technical procurements and service contracts. Additionally, the role involves providing expert operational support, troubleshooting, and evaluating emerging technologies to improve internal standards. To qualify for this role, candidates must have a Master's Degree or equivalent relevant experience in Industrial Automation, Process Control, or a related field. Essential experience includes proficiency in designing, implementing, and commissioning PLC-based industrial control systems using IEC 61131-3 programming languages, specifying industrial control systems, and testing, validating, and troubleshooting these systems. Experience in SCADA/HMI configuration and deployment is also required. The role requires a valid driving license and the ability to work in radiation areas and underground installations, as well as participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays, and official holidays. Nice-to-have skills include experience operating and maintaining industrial control systems, providing support to control system users, and familiarity with Siemens and/or Schneider PLC platforms. Knowledge in high-level programming languages (C++, Python, Java) and AI technologies, as well as advanced control techniques and the CERN UNICOS framework, are also beneficial. Knowledge in cooling or ventilation domains is an asset. The role offers a fully onsite working environment with a 40-hour workweek and the potential for a limited duration contract of 5 years, with the possibility of transitioning to an indefinite position under certain conditions. What the role asks for: - Master's Degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Industrial Automation, Process Control or a related field. - Proficiency in designing, implementing, and commissioning PLC-based industrial control systems using IEC 61131-3 programming languages. - Experience in specifying industrial control systems, including hardware architectures and control strategies. - Experience in testing, validation, and troubleshooting of industrial control systems. - Experience in SCADA/HMI configuration and deployment. - Valid driving licence. - Ability to work in radiation areas and underground installations. - Participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays and official holidays. - Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
