Check my CVWhat qualifications are expected of Account Managers in Switzerland?
A basic commercial qualification plus further sales training such as the Federal Diploma of Higher Education (Fachausweis) as a Sales Specialist is the usual path - but your sales figures remain decisive.
Most Swiss job postings cite a Commercial Employee EFZ, a commercial Vocational Baccalaureate, or a degree in Business Administration (FH) or Industrial Engineering for technical products as the basic requirement. Building on this, the Federal Diploma of Higher Education (Fachausweis) as a Sales Specialist, the Advanced Federal Diploma as a Sales Manager, a Higher Vocational College (HF) diploma in Marketing Management, or a CAS in Digital Sales are the recognised credentials. List these qualifications with year and institution, as recruiters distinguish precisely between the levels of higher vocational education.
For technical or pharmaceutical products, technical expertise counts just as much as the sales qualification: state explicitly if you hold training as a Polymechanic EFZ, Electronics Technician EFZ, or a life sciences degree, if it enables you to advise engineers and purchasing departments on equal terms. In regulated sectors, employers additionally expect industry-specific credentials, such as a pharmaceutical field sales certificate, VBS knowledge in insurance sales (Cicero points), or FINMA-relevant registration for financial products.
If you work without a formal sales qualification, compensate with method and system certifications: Salesforce or HubSpot certifications, MEDDIC, SPIN or Challenger training, as well as a course on contract law and terms and conditions under the Swiss Code of Obligations (OR). Such credentials belong in a dedicated "Certificates" section and appear more credible if you show in the experience section how you applied the method and what impact it had on close rate or sales cycle.
How do I present professional experience as an Account Manager convincingly?
Describe the portfolio, target size and segment for each role - and back up every statement with figures on revenue, target achievement, retention and pipeline.
Add two lines of context under each job title: the employer's industry and size, your territory (for example German-speaking Switzerland or Suisse romande), the number of clients managed, the portfolio volume in CHF, and your annual target. Without this framework, no one can judge whether CHF 1.4 million in new business was a strong or an average result. Define your segment precisely: transactional business with SMEs, mid-market, or key account management of corporate clients with purchasing committees each require different skills.
Then use three to four bullet points with the metrics that are actually read in sales: target achievement in percent, new and existing business revenue, Net Revenue Retention, churn, average deal size, close rate, sales cycle length, pipeline coverage and contribution margin. Also mention how you achieved these figures - for example through framework agreements with indexation, structured QBRs, or the win-back of churned clients. This lets the reader recognise the method behind the result.
Also demonstrate collaboration and process understanding, since Account Managers in Switzerland rarely sell alone: the interfaces with presales, inside sales, marketing and service, maintaining data in Salesforce or Dynamics 365, quotation and follow-up processes, and involvement in tenders via simap.ch. Explain gaps or frequent changes briefly and factually, for example due to restructuring or territory reallocation, and add a category B driving licence and willingness to travel if the role involves field sales.
How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed?
Two pages is standard; a professional photo is still common and welcomed in Switzerland, but optional.
Keep the CV to two pages: the first page with contact details, profile, a summary of key figures and the two most recent roles, the second page with earlier experience, education, certificates, languages and IT skills. Summarise older roles in a single line. The classic structure is reverse chronological, and recruiters expect full month and year dates rather than years alone.
A professional portrait photo in business attire remains common in Switzerland, especially in client-facing sales roles where personal presentation is part of the job. It is not mandatory. Also common are place of residence, nationality or residence permit (for example permit B or C), year of birth, and language levels according to the CEFR. Leave out marital status, religion and details about children; a photo from an event or holiday looks unprofessional.
Adapt your profile and summary to each role: a subscription software provider likes to read about ARR, retention and expansion revenue, while an industrial supplier is more interested in project business, quotation volume and technical consulting. State language requirements honestly, since client conversations in Suisse romande or Ticino will immediately reveal how good your French or Italian really is. Mention references with the note "available on request" and save the file with a clean name as a PDF, for example "CV_Brunner_AccountManager.pdf".
