Which qualifications belong on a CV for a Building Services Planner?
State your specialization in the EFZ first, followed by every higher qualification, since planning offices specifically search for heating, ventilation, sanitary, or refrigeration expertise.
Always spell out the qualification in full: 'Building Services Planner Heating EFZ' says more than 'trained planner'. If you completed your apprenticeship under the former title of heating draftsman, sanitary draftsman, or ventilation draftsman, add the current occupational title in brackets. If you hold a foreign qualification, state the recognition status with the SBFI, since this is one of the first questions HR departments ask.
Further education is a strong selection criterion in this profession. List the Certified Technician HF Building Services, the Bachelor FH Building Services, the Federal Professional Certificate Project Manager Building Services, or the Federal Diploma as Building Services Expert, together with the school and year. Add certificates with direct practical relevance, such as GEAK Expert, Minergie Partner, proof according to SWKI VA104-01, or BIM training.
Leave out course confirmations that have no professional relevance, and instead highlight your knowledge of standards. A sentence like 'Independently prepared compliance proofs according to SIA 384/1, SIA 380/1, SIA 385/1, and MuKEn 2014' immediately shows the level at which you work. If you are still in training, note your expected completion date so that HR can assess your availability.
How do I describe work experience and projects convincingly?
Organize each position by building category, SIA phases, and project volume, and back up your performance with figures such as kW, m³/h, or CHF.
For each position, use a context sentence to state which types of buildings you worked on - multi-family houses, schools, hospitals, laboratories, or industrial buildings all have completely different requirements. Then name the SIA phases you were involved in, for example 'preliminary project to tender (SIA phases 31 to 41)' or 'realization including on-site construction supervision'. This lets the office see whether you are best suited to planning, tendering, or on-site work.
Quantify consistently: system output in kW, air volumes in m³/h, number of housing units, building services costs in CHF, number of detail plans, or energy savings achieved in percent. Phrases such as 'geothermal probe heat pump 310 kW for 96 apartments, operating costs reduced from CHF 118'000 to CHF 78'000' are far more convincing than 'planning of heating systems'. Also mention management scope, such as the number of specialists or apprentices you supervised.
List your software separately and specifically, since many job postings filter for it. This includes Plancal nova, Trimble Nova, Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, WinWatt, Polysun, IDA ICE, Solibri, as well as cost estimation tools such as Messerli or Sorba. If you have BIM experience, describe your role within the model rather than just the program name, for example 'HVAC model manager with weekly IFC clash detection'.
How long should the CV be, does it need a photo, and what is typically Swiss?
Two pages, a friendly portrait photo, and a separate project sheet are the standard in the Swiss building services sector.
Keep to a maximum of two pages; with more than ten years of experience, three pages are acceptable if the last page is a project list. A portrait photo in the top right is still customary in Switzerland and is expected by most planning offices. In the header, include your place of residence, contact details, and residence status - for cross-border commuters or permit B, C, or G holders, this is relevant for contract processing.
A separate reference project sheet sets you clearly apart: five to eight projects with project name, client stated in neutral terms, building services costs, your role, and the year. Pay attention to confidentiality and do not name anyone you are not permitted to. Also list your category B driving license, since site visits in the region are part of everyday work.
State your language skills with levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference, since projects in the canton of Bern, Fribourg, or Valais are often bilingual. Mention your desired start date, notice period, and optionally a salary expectation if requested - realistic ranges lie between CHF 85'000 and CHF 130'000 per year, depending on region and responsibility. Finally, attach reference letters and copies of diplomas as a single PDF file and name it clearly, for example 'Lebenslauf_Bruegger_Gebaeudetechnikplaner.pdf'.

Marco Brügger
Building Services Planner Heating EFZ, Certified Technician HF Building Services
Building Services Planner with 11 years of experience in HVAC planning for residential buildings, schools, and laboratory buildings, from SIA phase 31 to 53. I calculate heating loads according to SIA 384/1 and heating energy demand according to SIA 380/1, size ventilation systems according to SIA 382/1, and manage tenders with NPK positions through to the award proposal. I currently lead projects with construction volumes of up to CHF 4.2 million in building services costs and consistently model in Plancal nova and Revit MEP with IFC coordination.
What sets me apart
Confident with standards from heating load to acceptance: I independently prepare compliance proofs according to SIA 384/1, SIA 380/1, and SIA 382/1, and oversee commissioning, hydraulic balancing, and hygiene acceptance according to SWKI VA104-01 through to handover.
Heat pumps and geothermal probes as a specialty: I have sized 27 geothermal probe and air/water heat pump systems from 12 to 480 kW, including probe field calculations, noise compliance proofs according to LSV, and permit applications with the canton.
BIM coordination without friction losses: As HVAC model manager, I run weekly IFC clash detection checks in Solibri and reduced clashes in a school building project from 340 to 18 before execution approval.
Cost transparency according to eBKP-H: I calculate building services costs according to eBKP-H, prepare tenders with NPK positions, and over the past 4 years kept 9 out of 10 projects within the cost estimate of +/- 5 percent.
Key achievements
Reduced energy costs of a residential development by 34 percent. Converted gas heating to a geothermal probe heat pump with 310 kW for 96 apartments; reduced operating costs from CHF 118'000 to CHF 78'000 per year, achieved Minergie certification.
Tender with savings of CHF 210'000. Tendered HVAC trades for an administrative building in 4 lots using NPK schedules of works; award total of CHF 3.1 million, 6.3 percent below the cost estimate.
Ventilation renovation during ongoing operations. Phased renewal of 12 air handling units with 84'000 m³/h in a care center; implemented in 9 phases without operational interruption, improved specific fan power by 41 percent.
