What qualification do I need as a Client Advisor in Switzerland?

The classic entry route is a commercial vocational education in banking or insurance, after which industry-specific certifications count for more than any general title.

For banking, the Commercial Employee EFZ in banking or a business-related qualification forms the basis. What matters most on your CV afterwards is the federal professional certificate: Financial Advisor IAF for holistic advisory work, or Banking Economist HF or the Banking Professional Certificate for those with management ambitions. State the title exactly as listed by the SBFI, including the year of the exam and the training provider (for example AKAD, SIB or Swiss Finance Institute).

In insurance, the VBV examination for insurance intermediaries (formerly VBV Intermediary) is practically mandatory, complemented by Cicero certification. Cicero requires annual training credits - so don't just write 'Cicero', write 'Cicero-certified, 40 training credits annually, valid until 2026'. Hiring managers can immediately see that your certification is active and no further qualification is needed.

Since the introduction of FinSA, client advisors at unsupervised institutions must be listed in the advisor register and provide evidence of initial and ongoing training. Mention your register entry, your FinSA and AMLA training, and any CAS qualifications in financial planning or pension provision. If you don't hold a professional certificate, list the course you are currently completing along with the expected year of completion - that's stronger than a gap.

How do I present my professional experience as a Client Advisor convincingly?

For each position, describe your portfolio, your competencies and authorities, and back up every statement with a figure.

Start each position with a context sentence: how many clients did you manage, what volume, which segment (retail, affluent, SME, private banking) and what approval authority did you have? A sentence like '620 private client households, CHF 148 million in assets, credit authority up to CHF 1.5 million' says more about your level than three lines of task description. Follow this with three to four achievement points.

Use the key figures that actually drive performance in your industry: net new money, number of advisory meetings per year, close and conversion rates, premium volume, cancellation and churn rates, mortgage volume, cross-selling ratio, NPS or customer satisfaction score. Present amounts using Swiss convention with an apostrophe, i.e. CHF 85'000 or CHF 11.4 million. If you're not allowed to disclose internal figures, work with percentages and relative improvements.

Also show the breadth of your advisory scope: pension planning across all three pillars, mortgage advisory including affordability and loan-to-value calculations, investment solutions with risk profiling, property and personal insurance, BVG affiliations for SMEs. Mention specific systems you have used, such as Avaloq, Finnova, Temenos or Salesforce Financial Services Cloud - many institutions filter applications by these keywords, and switching systems represents onboarding costs for the employer.

How long should the CV be, and does it need a photo?

Two pages are standard; a professional photo remains customary and expected in the Swiss financial and insurance industry.

Keep your CV to two pages. The first page should contain contact details, profile, at-a-glance facts and your current position with your strongest achievements. The second page should cover previous positions, education, certificates, languages and IT skills. Summarise positions from more than twelve years ago in two lines. Save the file as a PDF with a clear name, for example CV_Brunner_Nadine_ClientAdvisor.pdf.

A current, professionally taken portrait in business attire is standard in Switzerland, especially for client-facing roles in banking and insurance. Include your place of residence, citizenship or residence permit (B, C or G for cross-border commuters), year of birth and availability in the header. For banking positions, it is also relevant whether you can provide a current debt collection register extract and a criminal record extract with no entries - you may mention this discreetly under 'Available on request'.

Pay attention to Swiss conventions: state languages with CEFR level, mention dialect skills for client contact, give locations with the canton, and attach reference letters as a separate document rather than quoting them. Adapt your profile in three sentences for each position - a regional bank looks for relationship management and local roots, while an insurer tends to look for closing strength and portfolio growth. Avoid clichés like 'customer-oriented' without evidence and replace them with a figure.

Nadine Brunner

Client Advisor Private Clients, Federal Professional Certificate as Financial Advisor IAF, Cicero-certified

Client Advisor with nine years of experience in private client advisory at a regional bank and in all-lines insurance consulting. I manage a portfolio of 620 households with an investment volume of CHF 148 million and conduct around 480 advisory meetings per year on pension planning, financing and investments. My strength lies in holistic financial planning in line with FinSA requirements and in the clean documentation of appropriateness and suitability assessments.

What sets me apart

Holistic financial planning instead of product sales: I prepare pension analyses across the three pillars, including retirement planning, pension fund buy-in potential and tax optimisation. In 2023, 74 percent of my financial planning meetings led to at least one follow-up transaction, with no client terminating within 24 months.

Regulatory confidence under FinSA and the Insurance Supervision Act: I am well versed in client segmentation under FinSA (retail, professional, institutional clients), risk profiling and complete advisory documentation. Across three internal compliance reviews and one external audit, my 60 randomly sampled files achieved a 0 percent complaint rate.

Bilingual advisory in German/French: I advise clients from Central Switzerland and French-speaking Switzerland in both languages, including cross-border commuter topics such as withholding tax, pillar 3a upon change of residence and OASI (AHV) coordination. Around 18 percent of my portfolio is served in French.

Mortgage advisory with affordability expertise: I calculate affordability and loan-to-value ratios according to the Swiss Bankers Association's self-regulatory guidelines, and structure amortisation schedules and interest rate hedges. In 2022 and 2023, I arranged 96 mortgage transactions with a volume of CHF 41 million at a zero default rate.

Key achievements

Net new money of CHF 11.4 million in one year. Through systematic referral conversations and the reactivation of 140 dormant client relationships, I achieved net new money of CHF 11.4 million in 2023, exceeding the annual target by 38 percent.

Increased customer satisfaction to NPS 62. I introduced a structured follow-up call 30 days after each transaction. The Net Promoter Score of my service area rose from 41 to 62 within 18 months, while the churn rate fell from 6.2 to 3.1 percent.

Digitalised the advisory process, 25 percent time savings. As a project team member, I introduced the digital advisory process with e-signature and video consultation in four branches. Average processing time per pension file fell from 95 to 71 minutes, and I trained 34 employees.
