Which qualification belongs in a Retail Specialist CV?
State the EFZ in Retail with specialisation, sector and year of completion - followed by the further training that actually counts in sales.
Write out the qualification in full: 'Retail Specialist EFZ, specialising in Customer Advice, Consumer Electronics sector, 2018'. The specialisation (Customer Advice or Merchandise Management) and the sector tell HR managers more about your profile than the title alone. If you started with the EBA Retail Assistant qualification and then progressed to the EFZ, show this path openly - it demonstrates a willingness to develop. For a follow-up qualification under Article 32 BBV, state that you obtained the qualification while working.
Order further training by relevance to the advertised position. The Federal PET Diploma in Retail Management is the classic next step towards branch management, and the Federal Diploma of Higher Education in Retail Management (Detailhandelsmanager/in) leads towards divisional or regional management. An ongoing course also belongs in the CV, noted as 'in progress, completion 2026'. Sector-specific credentials such as the 40-lesson vocational trainer course, HACCP hygiene training in the food sector or manufacturer certificates for advice and service also earn points.
Avoid a long list of half-day courses unrelated to sales. Keep three to four certificates that fit the position, and supplement them with your system skills: SAP Retail, POS system with Worldline terminal, handheld scanner for stocktaking, merchandise management and branch reporting. This combination of qualification, PET diploma perspective and system routine makes your CV readable within seconds for branch managers and HR staff.
How do I describe my retail work experience with figures?
Replace task lists with branch KPIs: revenue, receipt value, stocktaking variance, floor space, team size and customer footfall.
Start each position with a context sentence that clarifies the scale: sales area in square metres, annual revenue in CHF, number of employees and apprentices, assortment breadth in number of items, and opening hours and seasonality. A sentence like 'Specialist store with 850 m², CHF 6.2 million revenue, 14 employees' says more than three lines of task description. HR staff immediately recognise from this whether your experience fits the advertised branch.
Then choose three to four points per position that show measurable impact. In sales, target achievement in percent, personal annual revenue, receipt value, accessories or upselling rate and revenue per square metre all work well. In merchandise management, stocktaking variance and shrinkage in percent of revenue, markdown rate, out-of-stock rate, returns turnaround time and number of delivery items checked are convincing. For management responsibilities, name team size, staff scheduling, personnel cost ratio and the number of successfully supervised apprentices.
Also mention activities that build trust in retail: daily closing and till discrepancies, safe and cash handling, implementation of the Price Indication Ordinance for promotions, youth protection and passed mystery shopping checks, best-before date checks under HACCP. If you have worked across several sectors, highlight the transferable core - advisory process, product-range logic, footfall management - so that your move from a food market to a specialist store comes across as a strength rather than a break.
How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?
Two pages are enough; a friendly portrait photo remains common in Swiss retail and is often expected.
Stick to two pages: page one with profile, brief overview, current position and core competencies, page two with further positions, education, certificates, languages and system skills. Career starters straight after the EFZ can manage well with one page, supplementing it with internships, casual shifts and projects from their apprenticeship. Use a clear layout without gradients, as many branch managers still print applications or read them on their mobile phone.
In retail, customer contact is central - which is why a professional portrait photo remains standard in Switzerland and is frequently expected at points of sale. Choose a current photo with a neutral background and a well-groomed appearance suited to the business. In the header, add your place of residence, contact details and, for foreign nationals, your permit, for example 'Permit C'. State your availability and notice period, as branches often need to fill positions at short notice.
Do not forget two Swiss particularities: state your flexibility for evening, Saturday and Sunday sales shifts and for stocktaking weeks concretely, and list your language skills with CEFR levels, including dialect for customer contact. Attach work references and interim references as separate PDF enclosures, not in the CV itself. On the subject of salary, at most a range belongs in the cover letter - in specialist retail, full-time positions for experienced Retail Specialists typically range between CHF 55'000 and CHF 70'000 depending on region and sector, and can exceed CHF 85'000 with deputy or branch management responsibilities.
