Which qualification belongs in a modern CV?
State your highest and most job-relevant qualification exactly using the Swiss designation, for example "Digital Marketer with Federal Professional Certificate" rather than a free-form description.
In the Swiss labour market, protected titles are decisive. Spell out "Federal Professional Certificate" (eidg. Fachausweis, Berufsprüfung) or "Advanced Federal Diploma" (eidg. Diplom, höhere Fachprüfung) in full and add the school and year of completion, for example SAWI, SIU or a commercial management school. For higher-education qualifications, include the level and institution: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (FH), majoring in marketing, or a CAS or MAS from a university of applied sciences such as the HWZ. An EFZ is not a footnote but the foundation of a professional career and should be stated together with its profile (E, M).
For further training, distinguish diplomas from certificates. Provider certificates such as Google Analytics 4, Google Ads or HubSpot belong in a separate "Certificates" section with the year, because they become outdated quickly; HR professionals in digital marketing pay attention to whether they are no more than two to three years old. Declare ongoing further training transparently with "in progress, expected completion 2026".
If you hold a foreign qualification, a brief explanation helps. Add the Swiss equivalent in brackets or a note on recognition by the SBFI. Certificates and diplomas themselves do not belong in the CV but as a PDF in the application dossier - in the CV, a single line is enough; the supporting documents belong in the appendix.
How should I structure work experience in a modern CV?
Reverse chronological order, one context line per role covering company, budget and team, followed by three to four points with hard numbers.
Start with your most recent position and list the role, employer, location and period in the format 03/2021 - present. This is followed by a context line that shows the scale you operated in: online shop revenue, media budget in CHF, number of accounts, team size, markets. Without this framework, your achievements cannot be properly assessed, since a ROAS of 5.4 on a CHF 200'000 budget is a different achievement to a ROAS of 5.4 on a CHF 1.8 million budget.
Phrase the points as results, not as a job description. Instead of "responsible for Google Ads," write "Managed search campaigns with an annual budget of CHF 640'000, reducing cost per order from CHF 38 to CHF 26." Use the key figures that matter in your field: ROAS, CAC, conversion rate, open and click rates, organic visibility, lead costs, number of A/B tests. Each role can carry three to four such points, with the oldest role kept shorter.
Keep in mind the pre-selection carried out by applicant tracking systems. Use the terms from the job posting verbatim - GA4, Consent Mode, marketing automation, performance marketing - and write out tool names in full together with their abbreviations. Explain gaps of more than three months factually in one line, for example a language stay, further training or family time; a modern CV does not conceal them, it puts them in context.
How long, with or without a photo - and what is specific to Switzerland?
Two pages, a professional photo, and details on citizenship or permit status as well as availability are standard in Switzerland.
Keep to a maximum of two pages, even with ten years of experience; summarise roles further back than 15 years in a single line. A modern structure begins with a three-sentence profile and an "At a glance" section with six facts, so the reader can tell within 30 seconds whether you are a fit. Use clear typography and an accent colour - in marketing, a well-designed document is itself proof of your work, but it must remain printable as a PDF and machine-readable.
A photo is still customary in Switzerland and is generally expected: professional, recent, neutral background, head-and-shoulders portrait. Also expected are place of residence, nationality or permit status (for example Swiss citizen or C permit), contact details with a Swiss mobile number, and the earliest possible starting date including notice period. Year of birth and marital status are optional; religion, AHV number and health information do not belong in the CV.
Do not state salary expectations in the CV; mention them only in the cover letter or interview if asked - for a position such as the one in this example, the range is roughly CHF 95'000 to CHF 115'000 depending on region and industry. Attach references, diplomas and certificates as separate PDF files, and provide references only on request and with the consent of the people concerned. Name the file cleanly, for example "CV_Nina_Brunner.pdf," and add a link to your LinkedIn profile or portfolio that is genuinely up to date.
