What education and certificates do Swiss employers expect from a Network Engineer?
The usual path leads via an Informatiker EFZ apprenticeship, complemented by an HF or FH qualification and at least one current vendor certification at Professional level.
Most job postings require a completed apprenticeship as an Informatiker/in EFZ (specialising in platform development or operational informatics) or Telematiker/in EFZ, followed by further training as a Dipl. Techniker/in HF Systemtechnik, the Federal Diploma of Higher Education in ICT Systems and Network Technology, or a Bachelor FH in Computer Science. State these qualifications exactly as they appear on the diploma, including the school and year of completion - Swiss HR staff know these titles and can immediately tell whether someone followed the standard educational path. A foreign qualification should be included in the CV with a note on recognition by the SBFI.
For certificates, currency matters more than quantity. List CCNA, CCNP Enterprise or CCIE, Fortinet NSE 4 through 7, Juniper JNCIA/JNCIP, Aruba ACMA/ACMP or Palo Alto PCNSE with expiry dates, and add AWS Advanced Networking or Azure Network Engineer Associate for cloud networking. If you are working towards recertification, state this transparently, for example 'CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure, written exam passed 2024, lab scheduled'.
Always tie certificates back to practical experience: a CCNP without a documented BGP or EVPN project carries less weight in Zurich or Basel than a documented migration with figures. For salary discussions, the following benchmarks help: junior roles typically start around CHF 80'000 to CHF 95'000, while experienced Network Engineers earn CHF 105'000 to CHF 135'000 depending on region and industry, plus on-call compensation.
How do I describe my work experience as a Network Engineer convincingly?
For each position, first describe the network size and technology, then list three to four measurable results instead of a list of tasks.
For each position, provide context: number of sites, number of endpoints or ports, number of data centres, SLA availability target, and team size. The difference between a campus network with 300 ports and a multi-site environment with 42 locations is decisive for hiring managers, but never comes across in phrases like 'operation of the network infrastructure'. Also name the industry, since requirements at a bank, a hospital with medical technology networks, or an industrial company with OT segmentation differ significantly.
Phrase results with figures: reduced MTTR, increased availability, reduced failover time, WAN costs saved in CHF, number of devices migrated, number of automated changes. A line such as 'reduced MTTR from 4.2 to 1.6 hours across 1'200 tickets per year' says more than three lines of task description. Also name specific protocols and platforms, since many applications are filtered by an applicant tracking system for keywords such as BGP, EVPN, SD-WAN, ISE or FortiManager.
Add aspects that matter in Swiss operations: on-call and maintenance windows (often at night or on weekends), change management under ITIL with CAB approval, cooperation with carriers and fibre providers, documentation requirements, and experience with tenders under public procurement law if you have worked for cantons or municipalities. Anyone bringing French or Italian for sites in Romandie or Ticino should state the level according to the CEFR.
How long should the CV be, is a photo needed, and what else is Swiss-specific?
Two pages, a professional photo, and a complete application dossier with work references are the standard in Switzerland.
Keep the CV to a maximum of two pages; with over ten years of experience, three pages are acceptable if the third page contains certificates, projects and further training. Summarise older positions in a single line. A photo is still customary in Switzerland and expected by most employers: neutral background, business attire, current. Details on date of birth, marital status and nationality or residence permit (B, C, or G for cross-border commuters) are common and help with administrative processing.
Include your work references (Arbeitszeugnisse) in the dossier, not just reference contacts - this is the biggest difference compared to many other countries. Interim references from a current position are also welcome. Diplomas, proof of certificates (for example the Cisco verification number) and a recent criminal record extract, if required for security-critical environments, round off the dossier. Submit everything together as a single PDF with a clean file name.
Tailor the profile and keywords to the job posting: an operator with a Cisco landscape will be interested in NX-OS, ISE and Catalyst SD-WAN, a Fortinet-based company in FortiManager and SD-WAN overlays, and a cloud-heavy employer in transit gateways, ExpressRoute and Zero Trust. Also mention willingness to take on-call duty, a category B driving licence for site visits, and - if applicable - experience with standards such as ISO 27001, IEC 62443 or the federal government's minimum ICT standard. These details often decide whether you get invited more than the design of the template.
