What qualification do I need as a Project Manager in Switzerland?
As a rule, the path leads through a vocational apprenticeship followed by HF or FH training, supplemented by a recognised project management qualification.
In construction, the Dipl. Site Manager HF in building or civil construction, the Dipl. Technician HF in construction planning, and the Bachelor FH in civil engineering or architecture are the usual foundations. Those coming from a trade background often start with an EFZ as a bricklayer, carpenter or plumber and later add the Building Foreman with a federal certificate of proficiency or the Master Builder with a federal diploma. Always write the qualification exactly as it appears on the diploma, including the designation HF, FH or eidg. dipl., because Swiss HR managers read these abbreviations very closely.
In IT and industry, a Bachelor FH in computer science, industrial engineering or systems engineering is common, often combined with a certification such as IPMA Level C or D (VZPM), PMP, HERMES 5.1 Project Manager or Scrum Master. HERMES is de facto standard at federal, cantonal and municipal level and should definitely appear on the CV for applications in the public sector. For each certificate, state the year it was issued and the body that awarded it.
If you hold a foreign qualification, have it assessed by the SBFI recognition office and note the status on your CV, for example by referring to a level confirmation. Also state your residence status, such as Swiss citizen, permanent residence permit C or residence permit B, directly in the header. This saves the HR department a follow-up query and prevents your application from being set aside for formal reasons.
How do I structure my work experience as a Project Manager convincingly?
For each position, describe the project context and then three to four results with figures on volume, schedule, cost and team size.
HR managers want to know immediately what project size you are used to. Therefore, state the construction sum or project budget in Swiss francs with an apostrophe, for example CHF 12'500'000, as well as the number of employees, contractors or sub-project managers you led. A line such as 'Responsible for 7 projects with a total construction sum of CHF 128 million' says more than three sentences about your leadership philosophy.
Show the phases you actually were responsible for. In construction, the language of SIA service phases is crucial: someone who covers phases 31 to 53, i.e. preliminary project to commissioning, has a different profile from someone who only accompanies execution. In IT and industry, HERMES phases, stage-gate models or agile frameworks serve the same function. Add concrete tools such as cost control according to BKP, supplementary claims management according to SIA 118, risk register, earned value or series ramp-up according to APQP.
Avoid phrases that fit any profession. Instead of 'responsible for the successful implementation of projects', write 'reduced supplementary claims ratio from 7.1 to 2.8 percent of the construction sum' or 'commissioned an assembly line with 14 stations 6 weeks ahead of schedule, output 1'200 units per shift'. List positions in reverse chronological order and keep the last ten years detailed, with older positions in one to two lines.
How long should the CV be and should it include a photo?
Two to a maximum of three pages are standard for project managers, and a professional portrait photo is still standard in Switzerland.
With ten or more years of project responsibility, two pages are acceptable, and for very large portfolios, three. In this case, add a separate project list as an appendix with the property, client or principal, volume, timeframe and your role. This reference list is a strong selling point in construction and plant engineering and is almost always reviewed during interviews. Make sure not to disclose confidential client information.
A professional portrait photo in the top right corner is still common in Switzerland and expected by most companies. Also include your place of residence, year of birth, nationality or permit, while marital status has become optional. Also state whether you hold a category B driving licence, as site and plant visits are part of daily work and hardly feasible without a vehicle.
Adapt the language to the job advertisement: if applying in German-speaking Switzerland, write your CV in German; in French-speaking Switzerland, in French. State language levels according to the CEFR, for example French B2, and avoid vague statements such as 'good knowledge' without a reference. Save the document as a PDF with a clear file name following the pattern CV_Lastname_ProjectManager.pdf and attach diplomas and work references as a separate dossier.

Marco Stadelmann
Certified Site Manager HF (Building Construction), Construction Project Manager (SIA 102, phases 31-53)
Construction project manager with 11 years of experience in the overall management of residential and commercial building projects with construction sums ranging from CHF 4 million to CHF 46 million. I manage projects from the design phase through tendering according to NPK to acceptance and defect rectification, including cost control according to BKP and client representation. Over the past five years, I have handed over 14 projects on schedule and reduced the portfolio's supplementary claims ratio to 2.8 percent of the construction sum.
What sets me apart
Cost control according to BKP with reliable forecasts: I carry out cost tracking at BKP single-digit level with monthly final cost forecasts; the deviation from the cost estimate was under 3 percent on the last 9 projects.
Tenders according to NPK and IVöB: Prepared and evaluated over 180 tenders based on NPK items, including legally sound award proposals in public procurement without a single successful appeal.
Schedule management with critical path: I work with construction schedules in MS Project and network planning techniques, identify critical paths early and have completely avoided construction delays across 14 handovers.
Client representation and stakeholder management: I chair client committees, authority meetings and resident information sessions, and supported 220 tenants through a renovation during ongoing operation without a single escalated complaint.
Key achievements
CHF 1.9 million savings through variant study. Led a variant study on load-bearing structure and façade for a residential project with 84 apartments, reducing the construction sum from CHF 32.4 million to CHF 30.5 million without lowering the finishing standard.
Reduced supplementary claims ratio from 7.1 to 2.8 percent. Introduced standardised works contracts according to SIA 118, clear scope boundaries and a supplementary claims approval process; reduced portfolio supplementary claim costs from CHF 3.4 million to CHF 1.2 million per year.
New commercial building handed over 6 weeks ahead of schedule. Through prefabrication of façade elements and parallelising interior fit-out, shortened the construction period from 22 to 20.5 months, enabling the tenant to start operations earlier with CHF 340'000 additional revenue.
