What qualification is required for field service technicians?

In most Swiss job postings, a technical EFZ is the baseline requirement; licences and further training determine the salary level.

The classic entry route is an EFZ as a polymechanic, automation technician, electronics technician, plant and equipment builder, or agricultural machinery mechanic. Name the occupation in full, with specialisation and type of training company, since an Automation Technician EFZ is read differently for control-heavy systems than a Polymechanic EFZ. If you trained abroad, add the SBFI recognition status - this saves the recruiter a follow-up question.

Then list the further training that really counts in field service: Maintenance Specialist with Federal Fachausweis, Technical Business Administrator, service technician courses, or an HF (higher vocational college) qualification in mechanical engineering or systems technology. Also decisive is the electrical connection licence under NIV Art. 13 or Art. 15 - many companies filter specifically for this, because without this licence you may not connect control cabinets yourself and would always need to bring a second person along.

List certificates with year and provider: control system courses (TIA Portal, TwinCAT, Rockwell), machine safety per EN ISO 13849-1, welding qualifications, refrigerant handling certification, forklift licence, PSAgA, or first aid. A category B driving licence belongs in the CV without exception, as does your willingness to travel in percent or deployment days, and your availability for on-call and weekend duty.

How do I describe my work experience with figures?

Show deployment volume, response and repair times, and the revenue you generated in the field.

Start each position with two lines of context: which systems, which industry, which territory, how many customers. A sentence such as 'Responsible for 60 packaging lines for food industry customers in Eastern Switzerland and southern Germany, on-call on a 1:4 rotation' says more than a list of tasks. This is followed by three to four bullet points with measurable results.

The most meaningful metrics in technical field service are first-time-fix rate, MTTR and MTBF, system availability or OEE, on-call response time, number of deployments and commissionings per year, and travel days. Add commercial figures: service revenue generated, volume of completed maintenance contracts in CHF 85'000 increments, or spare parts costs saved. If you don't have exact figures, work with well-founded estimates and mark them as average values.

Demonstrate your technical depth with standards and systems rather than adjectives: acceptance tests per SN EN 60204-1, risk assessments per EN ISO 13849-1, CE documentation per Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, IQ/OQ protocols in a GMP environment, reporting in SAP PM or Salesforce Field Service. Also mention trainings you have delivered to customers - this is seen as a sign of customer maturity and is a strong argument with service managers.

How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed?

Two pages are standard; a professional photo is still common in Switzerland, though not obligatory.

Stick to two pages. The first page contains contact details, a short profile, core competencies and the current position; the second covers the remaining work experience, education, certificates and languages. Summarise older positions from around 15 years back in two lines. Save the file as a PDF with a clear name such as 'CV_Wyss_ServiceTechnician.pdf' so it stays findable in the applicant tracking system.

A photo is still common in Switzerland: neutral background, work clothing or shirt, friendly and professional expression. Details on year of birth, marital status and nationality are optional; place of residence, citizenship or permit type (B, C, G), and driving licence, on the other hand, belong in the CV because they are relevant for deployment planning and cross-border commuter rules.

Occupation-specific Swiss particularities: state your deployment radius (canton, language region, DACH), your language skills with CEFR level - French B1 opens doors with customers in French-speaking Switzerland - and your availability for on-call duty. References are expected; in the CV, simply refer to them and include them in the application file. Also have the CV proofread by a specialist to make sure system and standard designations are written correctly.

Reto Wyss

Field Service Technician, Polymechanic EFZ with Federal Fachausweis in Maintenance

Service technician with 11 years of experience on packaging, filling and conveying systems for customers in the DACH region. Responsible for commissioning, troubleshooting on PLC-controlled systems (Siemens S7/TIA, Beckhoff TwinCAT), safety acceptance tests per EN ISO 13849-1, and retrofits including documentation per Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Electrical connection licence under NIV Art. 13 and on-call responsibility for a customer base of 60 systems.

What sets me apart

Electrics and mechanics from one source: Polymechanic EFZ with NIV connection licence: I take on drives mechanically, parameterise frequency converters and connect control cabinets to standard per SN EN 60204-1 - without a second technician on site.

Safety technology instead of makeshift fixes: Risk assessments and performance-level evidence per EN ISO 13849-1, validation of emergency-stop circuits and safety-door monitoring, plus clean acceptance protocols for SUVA inspections and customer audits.

The customer stays a customer: I explain the cause to operating staff instead of just swapping parts: 38 customer trainings held, resulting in 24 completed maintenance contracts with an annual volume of CHF 310'000.

Documentation that is traceable: Service reports, spare parts lists and changes to control programs are entered into SAP PM the same day - back-office query rate reduced from 21 to 6 percent within one year.

Key achievements

Downtime halved. At a beverage bottler, reduced MTTR from 4.2 to 2.0 hours by setting up a spare parts consignment stock with 84 items and translating controller fault codes into a quick-reference guide.

Retrofit instead of new investment. Led a control system retrofit from S7-300 to TIA Portal on 6 packaging lines; project volume CHF 480'000, implemented during the plant shutdown in 9 days, availability afterwards 97.4 percent.

Service revenue generated from field work. Generated additional orders for conversions and spare parts worth CHF 265'000 in one year through deployments, and increased the maintenance contract rate in my own territory from 41 to 63 percent.
