What qualification do I need to work as a retail salesperson in Switzerland?
The standard is the Federal VET Certificate as a Retail Assistant EBA (2 years) or the Federal Diploma as a Retail Salesperson EFZ (3 years), with the EFZ in the Sales Advice or Merchandise Management specialisation opening significantly more doors.

Write out the qualification in full and in its official title: "Retail Salesperson EFZ, specialisation in Sales Advice" or "Retail Assistant EBA". The specialisation is not a minor detail - it signals to store management whether you come primarily from consultative selling or from merchandise management. Also state the vocational school and year of completion. If you completed the vocational baccalaureate (Berufsmaturität) alongside your apprenticeship, this also belongs in the education section, as it opens the path to a higher vocational school (Höhere Fachschule) or to becoming a retail specialist with a federal diploma of higher education.
If you entered sales without an apprenticeship, that is not a disqualifying factor in Switzerland, but you need to fill the gap with demonstrable practical experience. State the number of years on the sales floor, your cash register responsibility, the size of the range you managed, and whether you prepare daily closing reports independently. It's also worthwhile to add a recognised further training course, such as the course for vocational trainers, a sales training programme from a further education centre, or pursuing recognition of prior learning under Article 32 of the Vocational Training Ordinance (BBV), which allows adults to obtain the EFZ based on five years of professional experience.
Classify foreign qualifications instead of leaving them unexplained. State the original title, the country, and, if available, the SBFI's recognition or level assessment. Equally important is stating your residence status, i.e. Swiss citizenship, settlement permit C, residence permit B, or cross-border commuter permit G. Retail often recruits at short notice, and a clearly stated status saves HR a follow-up question that would delay your application by days.
How do I describe my sales experience in a way that's convincing?
Replace task lists with figures on turnover, cash register responsibility, range size, stocktaking discrepancy and add-on sales rate.

Start each position with context about the business, because not all sales roles are alike. State the sales floor area in square metres, team size, type of range (food, non-food, specialist store, department store), and if possible the store's turnover. A candidate from a 5'400 m² department store with 30'000 item positions brings different strengths than one from an advice-intensive specialist store with service intake. Only this framework makes the figures that follow meaningful.
Then formulate three to four points that are measurable. Good key figures in retail are: daily takings at the register, number of checkout transactions per month, cash discrepancy in francs, stocktaking discrepancy and write-off rate in percent, out-of-stock rate, add-on sales or conversion rate, number of consultations per day, number of promotional resets according to planogram per year, and number of apprentices supervised. So don't write "customer advice and cash register duties", write "cash register reconciliation with daily takings of up to CHF 42'000, discrepancies below CHF 15 per month".
Also show responsibility that goes beyond the sales floor itself. Section responsibility, checking order proposals in the merchandise management system, handling returns and warranties, theft prevention, scheduling temporary staff for the Christmas season, or filling in across several departments are exactly the points that store managers look for when seeking successors for team leader roles. Also mention your flexibility for evening and Saturday sales as well as extended opening hours - that is a genuine selection criterion in retail.
How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?
Two pages is the standard in retail, and a professional photo is customary in Switzerland and practically expected in a role with customer contact.

Stick to two A4 pages, or one page if you have less than three years of experience. At the top, include contact details, a three-sentence profile, and an "At a Glance" block with six hard facts, so that store management can identify cash register responsibility, range size and availability within twenty seconds. Summarise older positions briefly beyond around ten years back. Continuous dates with month and year are mandatory, since gaps are usually addressed in interviews in retail anyway and appear more harmless when explained rather than concealed.
The photo is not legally required, but it is widely used in Switzerland. For a role on the sales floor, a friendly, up-to-date portrait in neat work attire creates a positive impression, while a holiday or selfie photo has an immediate negative effect. Leave out information that says nothing about suitability and only makes you unnecessarily vulnerable, such as religious affiliation or marital status details. Nationality or permit type, on the other hand, belongs in the header, as does your place of residence, since commute time for early shifts and Saturday work is relevant.
Include your work references (Arbeitszeugnisse) with your application - this is a Swiss practice that is consistently followed in retail. You should also mention references, usually with the note "References available on request", and practical extras such as a valid category B driving licence, forklift licence for the warehouse, or first aid course. Adapt your profile and key figures for each application to match the employer's range: someone applying to a food retailer should emphasise freshness responsibility, traceability and write-offs, while someone applying to a specialist store should emphasise consultation time, conversion rate and add-on sales.

Melanie Zbinden
Retail Salesperson EFZ, specialisation in Sales Advice - Home & Household range
Retail salesperson with an EFZ and eight years of experience on the sales floor in non-food stores of 1'200 to 2'800 m². Responsible for a range of around 4'500 items, cash register reconciliation with daily takings of up to CHF 42'000, and merchandise management including stocktaking discrepancies below 0.4 percent. Experienced in promotional resets according to planogram, training apprentices, and selling advice-intensive products with an add-on sales rate of 31 percent.
What sets me apart
Add-on and cross-selling backed by figures: Add-on sales rate of 31 percent in the Home section, 14 percent above the store average, thanks to structured needs assessment and actively recommending care products and warranty extensions.
Merchandise management, not just shelf stocking: Independent checking of order proposals in the merchandise management system, reducing the out-of-stock rate from 6.1 to 2.3 percent and keeping the write-off rate below 1.2 percent in the section under my responsibility.
Training officer on the sales floor: Completed a course for vocational trainers, guided two apprentices through to their EFZ, both achieving a practical work grade above 5.0 and subsequent permanent employment.
Multilingual advice in customer contact: Advising customers in German, French and English, including handling tax-free customers and processing warranty cases under OR warranty periods.
Key achievements
Section turnover increased by 12 percent. Grew the Home & Household section from CHF 1.45 million to CHF 1.62 million in annual turnover through secondary placements, seasonal themed displays, and training 6 team members in needs assessment.
Halved stocktaking discrepancy. Reduced stocktaking discrepancy from 0.81 to 0.38 percent: consistent label checks, daily booking of breakage and returns, and 100 percent team participation in theft prevention training.
Promotional resets without delay. Implemented 48 promotional changeovers per year on schedule according to planogram, reduced setup time per changeover from 3.5 to 2.2 hours, error-free pricing in 3 mystery shopper visits by regional management.
