What qualification do I need as an ASSC in Switzerland?

For a position as an ASSC, you generally need the EFZ as a Healthcare Specialist (French: assistant/e en soins et santé communautaire CFC) - include both designations in your CV if you are applying in the Romandy region or at bilingual institutions.

The standard route is the three-year initial vocational training under the OdA Santé training ordinance, leading to the EFZ qualification. If you have worked in the profession for years without formal training, state the path you took explicitly in your CV: recognition of prior learning under Art. 32 BBV, validation of educational achievements, or shortened apprenticeship for adults. HR staff want to know whether you hold a federally recognised EFZ or an assistant-level qualification such as the EBA Assistant in Health and Social Care, since this determines your competency profile and which procedures may be delegated to you.

If you obtained your diploma abroad, list the recognition by the Swiss Red Cross (SRK) as a separate line, with the date and reference number. If recognition is still pending, state the status transparently, for example «Application for recognition submitted to the SRK, decision expected 03.2026». Also state your residence status or work permit, since institutions will need to clarify this for employment and for the special private extract from the criminal record anyway.

Further training gives your profile noticeably more weight: BLS-AED-SRC with a current refresher date, Kinaesthetics, a basic course in Palliative Care, wound care expert modules, dementia courses, or the vocational trainer course. If you are planning your next career step, mention the Long-Term Care and Support professional examination you are pursuing, or the HF nursing degree programme, including your planned start date - this signals a willingness to develop without appearing inconsistent.

How do I present my work experience as an ASSC convincingly?

For each position, describe the setting, the number of people cared for, and the procedures you are actually authorised to perform independently - not just the tasks listed in the job advertisement.

Start each role with a context line: setting (acute hospital, long-term care, Spitex, psychiatry, rehabilitation), number of beds or residents, care levels, and shift model. «Long-term care, 42 residents, BESA levels 3-9, three-shift system including night duty» tells a nursing manager more than three lines of general task description. Also state whether you worked in primary care nursing, day-shift responsibility, or as a floater.

Then quantify with figures that matter in everyday nursing practice: number of people cared for per shift or route, dressing changes per month, injections, blood draws, apprentices mentored, pressure ulcer or fall rates, CIRS reports, audit results, or route punctuality. Phrase things in terms of outcomes: «Reduced fall incidents per quarter from 9 to 4 through structured fall-risk screening» rather than «Assisted with fall prevention».

Make your procedure profile explicit, since delegation varies from employer to employer: s.c. and i.m. injections, venipuncture, changing infusions without additives, bladder catheters, PEG tube feeding, oxygen administration, ECG recording. Add the systems you use, such as Nexus, BESA, RAI-NC, or Polypoint, and clearly state your employment level and any gaps - a 60 percent part-time role, maternity leave, or a return to work after a family break are common in Switzerland and not a disadvantage, provided they are dated.

How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed?

Two pages are standard, and a professional portrait photo is still customary in Switzerland and clearly expected in the healthcare sector.

Keep to a maximum of two pages: a header with name, place of residence, contact details, and citizenship or permit status, followed by a short profile, work experience, education, certificates, languages, and IT/systems. The last ten years should get the most space, with older positions summarised in a single line. Mention your availability, notice period, desired workload percentage, category B driving licence (essential for Spitex positions), and your willingness to work night, weekend, and public holiday shifts.

For the photo: professional, recent, friendly, placed in the top right corner - no holiday snapshots or selfies. Leave out details such as religion, marital status, or health information. You may state your year of birth and nationality, as this is common practice here and simplifies HR administration. Save the file as a PDF named «CV_Zbinden_Melanie.pdf».

In Switzerland, the application dossier should also include reference letters (not just interim references), copies of diplomas, proof of SRK recognition for foreign qualifications, and, on request, the special private extract from the criminal record. Tailor your short profile to the setting: for long-term care, emphasise dementia care and BESA; for Spitex, emphasise independence, route planning, and KLV recording; for an acute hospital, emphasise pace, monitoring, and interprofessional collaboration. Only state your salary expectations once asked - for experienced ASSC professionals, the range is roughly CHF 68'000 to CHF 82'000 for a 100 percent position, depending on canton and employer.
