What qualifications are expected of Cloud Engineers in Switzerland?
A BSc FH in Computer Science or an IT Specialist EFZ apprenticeship with further training is standard, in both cases supplemented by current vendor certifications.
The classic Swiss path starts with a vocational apprenticeship as an IT Specialist EFZ, specializing in Platform Development or Application and Systems Engineering, and progresses via the vocational baccalaureate (Berufsmatura) to a BSc FH in Computer Science at a university of applied sciences such as FHNW, ZHAW, or HSLU. A BSc or MSc from ETH Zurich or EPFL is equally accepted, as is a federal diploma as a dipl. Techniker HF in Computer Science or the federal Professional Certificate as an ICT System and Network Technician. If you hold a foreign qualification, note in your CV whether it has been recognized by Swissuniversities or the SBFI.
For cloud roles, certifications often carry more weight than an academic degree, since they demonstrate current platform expertise. State the exact title along with the year, for example Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104), AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), or HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate. Since these certifications expire, the renewal year should be included - an Azure certificate from 2017 without renewal looks worse than none at all.
A note on your work permit status is mandatory: Swiss citizenship, settlement permit C, residence permit B, or cross-border commuter permit G. Banks, insurance companies, hospitals, and public administration bodies frequently also require a criminal record extract or a personnel security clearance, and for mandates related to the federal administration, Swiss citizenship is sometimes a prerequisite. Include this information in the header so recruiters don't need to ask.
How do I structure the experience section as a Cloud Engineer convincingly?
For each position, describe the platform, the scale, and the measurable effect of your automation work - not a list of technologies.
Start each position with two lines of context: which cloud, how many subscriptions or accounts, how many applications, which industry, and whether regulated data was involved. A sentence like 'Operated an Azure platform with 38 subscriptions for 12 business units of a FINMA-supervised institution' says more than a list of 20 services. Follow this with three to four bullet points containing figures: number of migrated workloads, deployment frequency, MTTR, availability in percent, cost savings in CHF.
Highlight the four competency areas that are actually screened for in Switzerland: Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, Pulumi), container platforms (AKS, EKS, OpenShift, Helm, ArgoCD), automation and CI/CD (Azure DevOps, GitLab CI, Ansible), and security and compliance (IAM concepts, Key Vault, Azure Policy, network segmentation, data residency in the Switzerland North or eu-central-2 Zurich regions). Also mention hybrid topics such as ExpressRoute, VMware migrations, or connections to Swisscom and Exoscale environments, since many Swiss companies are exactly at that stage.
Mention tasks that carry real weight in operations: participation in on-call duty, incident management according to ITIL, disaster recovery tests with defined RPO and RTO values, and cost responsibility for a cloud budget. If you had responsibility for a budget, spell it out, for example 'Accountable for an annual cloud budget of CHF 2.5 million.' A link to GitHub or GitLab with your own Terraform modules is a useful addition to the CV, but does not replace it.
How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed?
Two pages are standard; a professional portrait photo remains customary in Switzerland and is expected by many recruiters.
Stick to two pages: page one with your profile, core competencies, certifications, and current position, page two with earlier positions, education, and languages. A third page is only justifiable with more than 15 years of experience and numerous projects, in which case summarize positions before 2012 in two lines. Avoid skill bars with percentage values - for cloud technologies, 'Terraform since 2018, 31 production modules' says far more than a bar at 80 percent.
A photo is not mandatory in Switzerland, but it is customary: neutral background, business attire, current image. Also expected are year of birth, place of residence with canton, marital status is optional, as well as nationality and permit type. State your availability, including a notice period of one to three months, and mention whether you can work hybrid or commute to Zurich, Bern, Basel, or Zug.
Realistic salary ranges are helpful for cover letters or interviews: Cloud Engineers with three to five years of experience typically earn between CHF 105'000 and CHF 125'000 in the Zurich area, while senior and lead roles range from CHF 130'000 to CHF 160'000, depending on industry and whether a 13th monthly salary is included.
