What qualifications are expected for a Marketing Manager in Switzerland?

Common qualifications are the Federal Certificate of Higher Education as a Marketing Specialist, the Federal Diploma of Higher Education as a Marketing Manager, or a Bachelor's degree from a university of applied sciences in Business Administration with a marketing major.

The classic path via higher vocational education is firmly established in Swiss job postings. State the Federal Certificate of Higher Education or the Federal Diploma of Higher Education with the correct title and year of completion, since HR managers distinguish very precisely between the professional examination (BP) and the advanced professional examination (HFP). Providers such as SAWI, KV Business School or a marketing school also belong in this line, as they help classify the educational path.

If you come from a university of applied sciences or a university, state the title exactly as it appears on your diploma, for example Bachelor of Science FH in Business Administration. For a foreign qualification, add a line on recognition by the SBFI, or at least a note on comparability; this removes an open question for recruiters and prevents your application from being sorted out due to uncertainty.

Continuing education shows that you keep pace with the discipline. A CAS Digital Marketing from HWZ, certificates in Google Ads and Analytics 4, training on the revised Data Protection Act, or a marketing automation certificate carry far more weight than a long list of half-day seminars. Include three to four relevant credentials with the year, and leave out anything older than seven years and technically outdated.

How should you structure your work experience in a Marketing Manager CV?

For each role, briefly describe the scope of responsibility, then back it up with three to four results supported by budget, reach or revenue figures.

Start each position with a context sentence: industry, company size, revenue, market territory, budget responsibility and team size. Without this framework, no one can judge whether you managed a brand with a CHF 200'000 or a CHF 2.4 million media budget. Particularly in Switzerland, it also makes a difference whether you covered only German-speaking Switzerland or the entire domestic market, including Romandie and Ticino.

Then formulate results rather than tasks. 'Responsible for online marketing' becomes 'increased ROAS from 2.4 to 4.1 and reduced CAC by 27 percent on CHF 1.1 million media spend'. Use the metrics that really matter in your segment: aided awareness, net reach, CPM, conversion rate, customer lifetime value, weighted distribution or promotional uplift. Round percentage figures without a reference base convince no one.

Also show the leadership and cross-functional dimension. Managing agencies, briefing quality, collaboration with sales, category management and the legal department, as well as coordination with retail partners, are all part of a Marketing Manager's daily work. Anyone who can demonstrate that they managed an annual budget with less than two percent variance and developed a team of five clearly positions themselves above pure campaign execution.

How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed?

Two pages are the standard; a professional portrait photo is still customary in Switzerland and is generally expected.

Keep to a maximum of two pages; with more than fifteen years of experience, three pages are acceptable. Describe the last ten to twelve years in detail, and summarise earlier positions in a short list. Combine your dossier into a single PDF: CV, reference letters and diplomas, cleanly named according to the pattern Surname_Firstname_CV.pdf.

A neutral portrait photo in business attire is still the convention in German-speaking Switzerland, whereas selfies or holiday snapshots disqualify a candidate immediately. Add your place of residence, contact details and - if you do not hold a Swiss passport - your permit status, such as B or C. You decide for yourself whether to include age, marital status and nationality; many Swiss dossiers still include them, but they are not required.

An additional rule applies to marketing profiles: the document itself is a work sample. Pay attention to calm typography, consistent date formats and flawless spelling, including Swiss spelling with ss instead of ß. A link to your LinkedIn profile and, if available, to a concise portfolio with two to three campaign case studies rounds off the dossier without overloading the CV.

Nadine Brügger

Marketing Manager, Federal Diploma of Higher Education in Marketing Management (HFP)

Marketing Manager with ten years of experience leading cross-media campaigns for consumer goods and retail brands in German-speaking Switzerland and Romandie. Responsible for an annual marketing budget of CHF 2.4 million spanning digital, trade marketing and traditional media, and leads a team of five plus agency partners. Combines data-driven management (GA4, marketing mix analyses, ROAS) with clean legal compliance under the revised Data Protection Act (revDSG), the Unfair Competition Act (UWG) and the Price Indication Ordinance (PBV).

What sets me apart

Trilingual campaign management for the Swiss market: Plans and localises campaigns for DE, FR and IT, including transcreation rather than plain translation; the Romandie adaptations achieved an 18 percent higher click-through rate in 2023 than the plain DE translation.

Legally compliant marketing under Swiss requirements: Implements newsletter, prize competition and promotion mechanics in compliance with the revDSG and UWG, clarifies price indications under the PBV with the legal department, and has recorded zero complaints from the Swiss Fairness Commission in four years.

Media planning backed by robust Swiss audience data: Justifies media budgets with WEMF-certified circulation figures, Mediapulse data and cost-per-contact figures rather than gut feeling; reduced the CPM in the print mix by 22 percent while maintaining the same net reach.

Trade marketing with major retail partners: Negotiates secondary placements, promotional display space and category plans, manages the promotional calendar across 52 weeks, and increased the weighted distribution of the core line from 61 to 84 percent.

Key achievements

Brand relaunch with +31 percentage points in aided awareness. Led the relaunch of a household brand from positioning through to rollout in 9 months; according to tracking studies, aided brand awareness rose from 24 to 55 percent on a campaign budget of CHF 780'000.

E-commerce revenue from CHF 3.1 million to CHF 7.8 million. Rebuilt the performance mix of SEA, paid social and CRM, increased ROAS from 2.4 to 4.1, and reduced customer acquisition costs by 27 percent within 18 months.

Marketing automation with 42 percent more repeat purchases. Implemented 14 automated lifecycle journeys in HubSpot, grew the newsletter base from 38,000 to 96,000 contacts, and increased the repeat purchase rate by 42 percent within one year.
