Which qualification belongs on a Platform Engineer CV?
State your highest formal qualification first and add the platform certificates actually required in Swiss job postings.
The classic Swiss path leads through the Federal VET Diploma as an IT Specialist EFZ (specialising in platform development or systems engineering), followed by the vocational baccalaureate and a university of applied sciences. Write out the qualification in full, e.g. 'Bachelor of Science FHNW in Computer Science' or 'BSc ZHAW Computer Science', and add the specialisation. A bachelor's or master's degree from ETH Zurich or EPFL carries strong weight with product-focused employers, but is not mandatory: for platform roles, proven operational experience often counts more than the academic title.
Those working without a degree should visibly position their higher vocational education: 'dipl. Informatiker HF' (Certified Computer Scientist HF), 'ICT Manager with Federal Diploma of Higher Education' or 'Business IT Specialist with Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training' are recognised titles in Switzerland and belong written out in full in the education section. If you hold a foreign qualification, state the recognition by swissuniversities or the SBFI and give the Swiss equivalent title in brackets.
For certificates, Swiss employers weight CKA, CKAD and CKS, HashiCorp Terraform Associate, and the architect-level certifications from Azure, AWS or Google Cloud most highly. Add the year after each one so that currency is clear, and leave out certificates that are more than six years old and technically outdated. If you want to work in a regulated environment, also mention knowledge of ISO 27001, the revFADP and FINMA Circular 2018/3 - this sets you apart from purely technical profiles.
How do you present your Platform Engineer work experience convincingly?
For each position, describe the size of the platform, the number of teams served and the measurable effect on delivery and stability.
Start each position with a context sentence: how many clusters, services, environments and development teams you were responsible for, whether on-premises, hyperscalers or Swiss providers such as Exoscale or Infomaniak were in use, and what the on-call model looked like. Without this information, a recruiter cannot assess whether you operated a platform for 5 or for 60 teams. A sentence like 'Platform team of 9 people for 62 development teams, 480 services across 12 clusters' says more than half a page of task lists.
Phrase the bullet points as results afterwards and use the DORA metrics as a shared language: deployment frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate and mean time to recovery. Add availability against SLO, reduction in on-call alerts, onboarding time for new services and cloud costs in Swiss francs, for example 'reduced cloud costs from CHF 96'000 to CHF 61'000 per month'. Mention tools in connection with the result rather than as a loose cloud of keywords.
Gaps or side tracks are not a problem if you put them in context. Open-source contributions, your own homelab with Talos or k3s, a CNCF meetup talk in Zurich or Bern, and internal training sessions demonstrate learning ability and impact beyond your own team. Avoid, on the other hand, phrases like 'team player' or 'solution-oriented': these apply to every profession and crowd out space for your numbers.
How long should the CV be, is a photo needed, and which Swiss conventions apply?
Two pages, a professional photo and clear details on permit, availability and language levels are the standard in Switzerland.
Keep the CV to two pages; with more than twelve years of experience, three pages are acceptable if the first two cover the relevant positions. Summarise older positions in one line per employment. A photo is still customary in Switzerland and expected by many HR departments: a current, friendly business-casual portrait, not a holiday snapshot. At international tech companies with a Swiss location, you can omit it without any disadvantage.
At the top, list your place of residence, nationality or work permit (B, C, G or EU/EFTA), phone number in the format 079 000 00 00, and a professional email address. Add the earliest possible start date and your notice period, usually one to three months. For roles with on-call duty, it helps to state how quickly you can reach the site and whether you are already familiar with 24/7 rotation. State languages with the CEFR level, e.g. German native language, English C1 - in platform teams, English is often the working language, but German is needed for stakeholder discussions and audits.
Leave out salary figures on the CV and only state your expectations in the cover letter or interview; Platform Engineers in Switzerland typically earn between CHF 110'000 and CHF 160'000 per year, depending on region and industry. List references with the note 'available upon request' and attach work references and diplomas as separate PDF files. Save the dossier as a single, searchable PDF file with a descriptive name, for example 'CV_Braendli_Platform_Engineer.pdf', and adapt the keywords to the job posting so that the applicant tracking system recognises your core competencies.
