What qualifications are expected of a Product Designer in Switzerland?
A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Interaction, Industrial or Digital Design from a Swiss university of applied sciences is standard, complemented by further training in human-centred design.
For digital products, Swiss job postings most frequently cite a BA or MA in Interaction Design from ZHdK, Digital Ideation or Screen Design from Lucerne University of Applied Sciences, Media Engineering and Interaction Design from HEIG-VD, or Media Interaction Design from ECAL. For physical products, Industrial Design (ZHdK, ECAL, SUPSI) and technical profiles such as an FH Bachelor's in Product Development are sought after. List your degree with the exact title, institution and year so that HR can assess equivalence immediately.
Career changes work better in this profession than in regulated occupations, but require proof: a CAS in Human-Centred Design and Usability Engineering (FHNW), the CAS in User Experience Design from HWZ, or CPUX-F certification from UXQB demonstrate that you master methodology per EN ISO 9241-210 rather than simply designing surfaces. For foreign diplomas, add a brief note on recognition by Swissuniversities or the SBFI.
More important than any title is proof of your working method. Link your portfolio in the CV header with two to three case studies showing the problem, research, design decision and impact. Also use the technical language your contacts expect: design tokens, component governance, prototyping depth, accessibility checks and handoff to the frontend team.
How do I structure work experience effectively as a Product Designer?
Describe the product context for each role, followed by three to four results with figures from research, delivery and product metrics.
Start by setting the scene: which product, how many users, which platforms, how large the team was and what your role was within the sprint. A sentence such as 'B2B SaaS for accounting, 42,000 active users, three Scrum teams' says more about your level than a list of tasks. Follow this with bullet points showing impact: completion rate, task success, SUS score, support tickets, conversion, time-to-market or the number of components in active use.
Make your own contribution visible. State how many usability tests you moderated, how many interviews were conducted in which language, and which findings led to which design decisions. Phrases such as 'Reduced onboarding from 11 to 6 steps, completion rate up from 54% to 78%' are verifiable; 'responsible for UX' is not. If figures are confidential, use relative statements such as '+14% conversion'.
Pay attention to the balance between craft and collaboration. Swiss product teams expect you to align designs with the Product Owner, frontend, legal and compliance - for example on the revised Data Protection Act for consent flows, or DDA (BehiG) requirements for public sector clients. One point per role on design reviews, workshop facilitation or mentoring junior designers rounds out the picture.
How long should the CV be, and are a photo and portfolio needed?
Two pages, a professional portrait photo and a clearly visible portfolio link are standard in Switzerland for Product Designers.
Keep the CV to a maximum of two pages, even with ten years of experience: describe the last three roles in detail, and list earlier positions with only title, company and period. A photo remains common in Switzerland and is expected by many HR departments - choose a professional, neutral image. Keep the document clean and typographically restrained; an over-designed CV tends to work against you for product roles, since the portfolio is what demonstrates design competence.
The portfolio link belongs in the header, not in the cover letter. Make sure the page is accessible without a password, or place the password directly next to the link. Two to three case studies are sufficient if they show process and impact. Be mindful of NDA obligations: anonymised screens, altered figures or a brief note on confidentiality are more acceptable than missing evidence altogether.
Swiss particulars round out the dossier: work permit or citizenship, place of residence, earliest possible start date, workload percentage and language levels per CEFR. State your salary expectations only if requested - for Product Designers, ranges vary by experience and region, roughly between CHF 85'000 and CHF 135'000. List references with the note 'available on request', and attach interim references and diplomas as PDF enclosures.

Nadine Brunner
Senior Product Designer (BA Interaction Design ZHdK, CAS Human-Centred Design FHNW)
Senior Product Designer with nine years of experience in B2B SaaS and mobile banking, from discovery through to design handoff in a sprint-based environment. I work according to EN ISO 9241-210, conduct usability testing myself and translate insights into design systems that frontend teams can implement directly. Bilingual project work (German/French) for clients in German-speaking Switzerland and Romandy, with accessibility per WCAG 2.2 AA and eCH-0059 as standard practice.
What sets me apart
Design system ownership rather than individual screens: I build and maintain component libraries using Figma Variables and design tokens, documented in Zeroheight and kept in sync with Storybook - so web and app remain visually and functionally consistent.
Independent research capability: I conduct interviews, contextual inquiry and moderated tests per EN ISO 9241-11 myself, including recruitment, analysis in Dovetail and prioritising findings together with the Product Owner.
Accessibility from the wireframe stage: I check contrast ratios, focus order, keyboard operability and screen reader labels already at the prototype stage - two audits per eCH-0059 produced no critical findings.
Bilingual product work: I design interfaces for DE/FR markets and account for text length, date formatting, CHF amounts and forms of address already in the layout rather than only at the localisation stage.
Key achievements
Onboarding completion from 54% to 78%. Redesigned the self-service onboarding of an accounting SaaS for SMEs: reduced from 11 to 6 steps, increasing the completion rate by 24 percentage points within four months.
Design system cuts time-to-market by 30%. Built 120 components with design tokens; average implementation time for a standard feature dropped from 15 to 10.5 developer-days across three product teams.
App rating from 3.6 to 4.5 stars. Redesigned the payment and eBill flows of a mobile banking app with 210,000 users; support tickets related to payment authorisation fell by 22%.
