What qualification is expected of Product Managers in Switzerland?

A degree from a university of applied sciences (FH) or a university in business information technology, business administration, computer science or engineering is the usual entry point, but proof of product ownership is decisive.

For Product Manager positions in Switzerland, most job postings require a Bachelor's or Master's degree from a university of applied sciences or a university. Commonly mentioned fields are business information technology, business administration, computer science, electrical engineering or industrial engineering. Those entering via higher vocational education, for example as a federally certified business information technology specialist or with a Techniker HF diploma, can offset this with further education such as a CAS or MAS in Product Management, Digital Business or Innovation (offered among others by HWZ, FHNW, HSLU or ZHAW). Always spell out Swiss qualifications correctly, i.e. 'BSc FH in Business Administration' rather than just 'Bachelor's degree'.

Certificates do not replace a degree, but they demonstrate methodological competence. Common and recognized certifications include PSPO I/II from Scrum.org, SAFe POPM in companies using a scaled framework, IREB CPRE for requirements engineering, and Pragmatic Institute for market-oriented product management. In regulated industries, additional credentials are valuable: for medtech software, knowledge of IEC 62304 and MDR; for financial products, FINMA circulars, ISO 20022 and revDSG. State the year of issue so that HR staff can gauge how current it is.

Foreign diplomas should be put into context to make them comparable. A note such as 'equivalent to Swiss Master's level, Swiss ENIC recognition recommendation' creates clarity. Also state your residence status (Swiss citizenship, B or C permit, EU/EFTA), as recruiters check this early on for product roles involving customer contact across several language regions.

How do I structure work experience as a Product Manager convincingly?

For each position, describe the product context, scope of responsibility, and three to four outcomes with metrics - not your list of tasks.

Start each position with a context line: Which product, which market, which business model, how many users or customers, what team setup? 'B2B SaaS for accounting, 1'400 Swiss SMEs, two cross-functional teams with 14 people, CHF 6.8 million ARR' says more than any list of meetings. Recruiters immediately recognize whether your experience matches the maturity and scale of the advertised product.

Then come the results - always with a figure and a time frame. Use the metrics that really matter in Product Management: ARR or MRR, activation rate, retention and churn, time-to-value, NPS, conversion, adoption of new features, and delivery predictability. Phrase outcomes rather than outputs: 'Increased activation rate from 48 to 79 percent' beats 'Introduced onboarding feature'. If you are not permitted to disclose absolute figures, work with relative figures and time windows.

Also make visible how you work: discovery cadence, prioritization logic, dealing with stakeholders from Sales, Legal and Compliance, and collaboration with Engineering and UX. Name your tools specifically (Jira, Confluence, Productboard, Amplitude, Figma) and add Swiss specifics such as multilingual products in DE/FR/IT, data hosting in Switzerland, or requirements arising from revDSG and QR-bill. These are exactly the details that set you apart from generic applications.

How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed?

Two pages is standard; a professional photo is still customary in Switzerland and is usually expected.

Keep the CV to two pages, or a maximum of three if you have more than ten years of experience. Give recent positions space, and summarize positions further back than twelve years in a single line. Use month and year consistently (03/2021 - present) so that no gaps appear. Gaps themselves are not a problem if you briefly explain them, for example further training, family time, military service or time abroad.

A professional portrait photo in the top right corner is still common in Switzerland and expected by many HR managers; only omit it if the company runs an anonymized recruitment process. Also state your place of residence, nationality or permit status, phone number in the format 079 000 00 00, and a professional email address. Date of birth and marital status are optional and are increasingly left out.

A complete Swiss application dossier includes a cover letter, CV, work references and diplomas as a single PDF, sensibly named, for example 'Application_ProductManager_Brunner.pdf'. State references as 'available on request'. Adapt language and terminology to the job posting: if it is advertised in German, apply in German, even if the working language is English. If you need to state salary expectations, orient yourself to the market - entry-level Product Management roles are often in the range of CHF 95'000 to CHF 115'000, while experienced Senior Product Managers in the Zurich and Zug area earn CHF 130'000 to CHF 160'000.

Nadine Brunner

Senior Product Manager B2B SaaS, MSc Business Information Technology

Product Manager with 9 years of experience in B2B SaaS and payment products for Swiss SMEs, responsible for a portfolio with CHF 6.8 million ARR. I work with Continuous Discovery, conduct 25-30 customer interviews per quarter in German and French, and consistently prioritize the roadmap according to outcome KPIs rather than feature requests. I translate regulatory requirements such as revDSG, ISO 20022 and QR-bill into clear requirements for two cross-functional teams.

What sets me apart

Discovery directly with Swiss SMEs: I conduct customer interviews and usability tests myself - in Swiss German, Standard German and French. 110 interviews per year produce Opportunity Solution Trees that link every roadmap decision to a proven customer problem.

Regulation as a product advantage: revDSG, ISO 20022, QR-bill and eCH-0059 accessibility are not blockers for me but requirements with a deadline. I translate them into prioritized epics and align them with Legal, Compliance and the external auditor.

Monetization and packaging in CHF: I am responsible for pricing and packaging structure, including Van Westendorp studies and willingness-to-pay tests. The last re-packaging increased average annual revenue per customer from CHF 3'900 to CHF 5'250.

Multilingual product for three language regions: I manage localization and terminology for DE/FR/IT, including date, number and address formats. As a result, the Romandie's share of new business rose from 11 to 24 percent within 18 months.

Key achievements

Increased ARR from CHF 4.1 million to CHF 6.8 million. Realigned the roadmap around three core jobs of SME accounting: +66 percent ARR within 24 months, while reducing net churn by 3.4 percentage points.

Reduced time-to-value from 21 to 6 days. Redesigned onboarding with self-service import and guided account mapping; activation rate of new corporate customers rose from 48 to 79 percent, onboarding tickets fell by 41 percent.

Delivered QR-bill and ISO 20022 on schedule. Migrated 1'100 existing customers without production downtime, completed 6 weeks ahead of the regulatory deadline; support volume in the transition month was 22 percent below forecast.
