What qualification do you need as a Project Engineer in Switzerland?
A bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, systems engineering or industrial engineering from a university of applied sciences or ETH/EPFL is standard.
The classic Swiss path leads via an EFZ as a polymechanic, automation technician or electronics technician, followed by a vocational baccalaureate and a BSc at a university of applied sciences such as ZHAW, FHNW, OST or HES-SO. This path is explicitly not a disadvantage in the application process - many employers value closeness to manufacturing. Name the training company and occupation, as HR staff use this to gauge your practical foundation. An MSc from ETH or an MAS is particularly advantageous in plant engineering, medtech and research projects.
For career changers from design or commissioning, project methodology counts. Certificates such as IPMA Level D or C via VZPM/spm, PMP, or for IT-related projects HERMES 5.1 Advanced, lend credibility to your role. Additional evidence such as a Six Sigma Green Belt, a Suva course on machine safety, or GAMP 5 training carries significant weight depending on the industry. Present the certificates with year and issuing body in a dedicated section.
If you hold a foreign qualification, add the Swiss ENIC classification or a note such as 'equivalent to Swiss bachelor's level'. Also state your residence status, such as permit B or C, so recruiters can gauge the administrative effort involved. For engineering titles from the EU, a reference to recognition under the bilateral agreements is usually sufficient.
How do you describe project experience without just listing tasks?
Describe each project with four key figures: volume in CHF, duration, team size and measurable outcome.
Start each position with a context line about the employer: industry, type of plant or product, number of employees and typical project size. Without this framework, no one can tell whether your projects involved CHF 150'000 or CHF 4 million. Follow this with three to four bullet points backed up with figures: '96% schedule adherence across 23 projects' says more than 'responsible for project delivery'.
Show the full project life cycle you master: specification and requirements, concept and design freeze, procurement, production support, FAT at the supplier, assembly, SAT at the customer, and handover into warranty. State specifically which phases you were personally responsible for, since 'Project Engineer' can mean detailed technical work or overall commercial responsibility depending on the company. Also mention whether you held budget and variation order responsibility.
Don't leave technical standards and methods abstract: risk assessment under EN ISO 12100, CE marking under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, welded structures under EN 1090, pressure equipment under the Pressure Equipment Directive, or validation under GAMP 5. Add methods such as FMEA, earned value analysis, design reviews and lessons learned. Recruiters and ATS systems specifically search for such terms.
How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?
Two pages are standard; a professional photo is still common in Switzerland, but not mandatory.
Stick to two pages: page one with contact details, profile, core competencies and current position, page two with the rest of your career, education, certificates and languages. If you have more than ten years of experience, summarise early positions in two lines rather than cutting details that support your current role. A separate project list as a third page is accepted in plant engineering if it lists volume, industry and your role in table form.
A professional portrait photo in business attire increases the response rate in Switzerland but is legally optional. State your place of residence, nationality or permit type, year of birth and availability - these details are expected. A category B driving licence and percentage of travel readiness are relevant for Project Engineers, since commissioning at customer sites is part of the job.
Adapt language and order to the target company: apply in German in German-speaking Switzerland, in French in Romandy, and often in English for international corporations. State language levels according to CEFR (C1, B2), not vague terms. Attach references and diplomas as a separate PDF; keep the CV itself lean and without salary figures - only mention a salary expectation such as CHF 110'000 if the job advertisement asks for it.
