Which qualification counts in Switzerland for a position in quality management?

As a rule, Swiss employers expect a technical basic education plus a qualification such as Quality Specialist with Federal Diploma of Higher Education, Quality Manager NDS HF or a university of applied sciences engineering degree with a quality specialization.

The classic path begins with an EFZ as a polymechanic, design engineer, laboratory technician or chemical and pharmaceutical technologist. This is followed by further education with providers such as SAQ-QUALICON: Quality Specialist with Federal Diploma of Higher Education, then Quality Manager NDS HF or the Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education. Write these titles in your CV exactly as they appear on the diploma, including the institution and year - HR departments in industry know the distinctions precisely and read them as a competence level.

If you come from a degree program, name the qualification (BSc or MSc FH/ETH in mechanical engineering, systems engineering, life sciences) and supplement it with industry-specific certificates. For medical technology these are MDR 2017/745, ISO 13485 and EN ISO 14971, for pharma GMP according to PIC/S and Annex 1, for the supply industry IATF 16949 and VDA 6.3, for food HACCP, FSSC 22000 or IFS. These abbreviations are search terms in applicant tracking systems, so they belong in your CV both spelled out and abbreviated.

Auditor qualifications are a standalone selling point. State whether you are an internal auditor, lead auditor according to ISO 19011 or VDA 6.3 process auditor, and how many audits you conduct per year. Six Sigma Green or Black Belt, as well as knowledge of validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) and measurement technology, add further credibility - especially if you can back it up with a project and figures.

How do I structure my professional experience as a quality professional convincingly?

Describe the industry, standards landscape and company size for each position in a context line, then support this with three to four results backed by figures from everyday quality work.

Context determines whether your experience is transferable. An audit at a Class III medical technology company has little in common with an initial ISO 9001 certification at a trading company. State the industry, certifications, product risk class, number of employees and your area of responsibility - for example, managing seven people in QA and QC or overseeing three production lines.

Phrase your results using the metrics that matter in quality management: PPM rate, cost of poor quality as a percentage of revenue or in Swiss francs, cpk values, number of nonconformities in the certification audit, CAPA case cycle time, first-time acceptance rate of initial sample inspection reports, scrap and rework rate, supplier OTIF. A sentence like "Passed ISO 13485 recertification with 0 major and 3 minor nonconformities" says more than "responsible for the quality management system".

List systems and methods where you used them, and summarize them again compactly in a separate block. This includes CAQ systems, SAP QM, LIMS, Trackwise, Minitab or qs-STAT, as well as methods such as 8D, Ishikawa, FMEA, SPC and value stream mapping. If you led a system implementation, add the project duration, budget in CHF and number of users trained - this turns a list into evidence of project responsibility.

How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?

Two pages are standard, a professional photo is still customary in Switzerland, and a concise dossier with diplomas and reference letters belongs with it.

Stick to a maximum of two pages, even with fifteen years of experience. Present the last ten to twelve years in detail and summarize older positions in a single line. Put your profile, key achievements and standards and systems knowledge on the first page, because many quality managers and HR staff decide within less than a minute whether your dossier makes the shortlist.

A professional headshot in business attire is still common in Switzerland and is rarely viewed negatively at industrial companies. Also include the details expected here: place of residence, nationality or residence permit, possible starting date, and language levels according to CEFR. If you want to work in a border canton or in the Romandy region, your French level is a genuine selection criterion, because audits, training sessions and complaint discussions take place in the national language.

Include diplomas (EFZ, Fachausweis, NDS HF), auditor and Six Sigma certificates, and reference letters with the dossier - as a single, cleanly named PDF file. Provide references only upon request and coordinate with them beforehand. On the topic of salary, a realistic range helps: for quality engineers it is often CHF 85'000 to CHF 110'000 depending on region and industry, and for management positions in quality management CHF 120'000 to CHF 150'000.

Nadine Bärtschi

Head of Quality Management, Quality Manager NDS HF, Six Sigma Black Belt

Quality manager with twelve years of experience in regulated production environments in medical technology and the automotive supply industry. I run management systems according to ISO 13485, ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 through certification and surveillance audits and am responsible for CAPA, complaint and change processes through to release. My strength is combining regulatory assurance with measurable reduction of cost of poor quality in series production.

What sets me apart

Regulatory depth for medical technology: I manage technical documentation according to MDR 2017/745, risk management according to EN ISO 14971 and the preparation for Notified Body and Swissmedic inspections, including provision of design history files for 6 product families.

Statistics instead of gut feeling: I set up process capability evidence (cpk), measurement system analyses including Gage R&R, and SPC control charts using Minitab and Q-DAS - for 42 critical characteristics I raised the cpk from 1.05 to over 1.67.

Audit experience on both sides of the table: As an auditor according to ISO 19011, I conduct around 18 internal audits and 9 supplier audits annually in Switzerland, Germany and Eastern Europe, while also accompanying external audits by SQS and the Notified Body.

Quality as a cost lever: I calculate quality in Swiss francs: scrap, rework, credit notes and recall risks are reported monthly as a cost of poor quality ratio and backed up with clear action packages in management review.

Key achievements

MDR transition without revenue interruption. Transition of 6 product families from MDD to MDR 2017/745 in 19 months: 87 technical documentation files revised, 23 supplier contracts converted to quality assurance agreements, certificate obtained without major nonconformity.

Cost of poor quality reduced by CHF 640'000. With 9 DMAIC projects and a structured 8D process, the cost of poor quality ratio was reduced from 3.8 % to 1.6 % of revenue, corresponding to savings of around CHF 640'000 per year on revenue of CHF 29 million.

CAPA backlog fully cleared. Introduction of a CAQ-supported CAPA workflow: 118 open cases resolved, average closure time shortened from 96 to 31 days, effectiveness check documented for 100 % of cases.
