What qualification is expected of Sales Managers in Switzerland?

The classic Swiss path leads through the Federal Certificate of Proficiency as Sales Specialist and then the Federal Diploma as Sales Manager, or alternatively through a degree in Business Administration with a sales focus.

List your highest job-specific qualification first in your CV. A Federal Diploma as Sales Manager (Advanced Federal Examination) or the Federal Certificate of Proficiency as Sales Specialist immediately signals to Swiss HR professionals that you have learned sales planning, territory management, and leadership in a structured way. Mention the year of the exam and the awarding body, for example SAWI or KV Business School, as these names are recognized in the sales industry.

If you come from a technical industry, the combination of technical expertise and sales training is decisive: for example a degree as Techniker HF or a Bachelor FH in mechanical engineering plus a postgraduate sales program. In this case, state in one line which product world you can sell, for example drive technology, medical technology, or SaaS. This is exactly what the hiring manager checks first.

Supplement foreign qualifications with a note on comparability, for example 'Master in Business Administration, equivalent to Master's level; SBFI recognition certificate available.' Method certifications such as Miller Heiman, SPIN Selling, or a Salesforce certification also add value. Avoid listing short webinars without an exam, as this dilutes the picture.

How do I present my professional experience as a Sales Manager convincingly?

Every role needs three pieces of information: revenue responsibility in CHF, team size or territory, and quota attainment in percent.

Briefly describe the context for each position: industry, customer segment (SMEs, key accounts, public sector), average deal size, and sales cycle length. A sentence like 'Responsible for 320 target customers in Romandie, average order value CHF 42'000, sales cycle 4 months' says more than a list of tasks. This should be followed by three to four achievements with figures.

Quantify what is measured in sales: quota attainment, revenue and margin development, new-customer share, pipeline coverage, forecast accuracy, win rate, churn, and average discount. Also mention leadership metrics, such as team size, turnover, or number of account plans introduced. If you cannot disclose absolute figures for confidentiality reasons, work with percentages and ranges.

Explain gaps or short employment periods factually in half a line, for example 'Restructuring, position eliminated as of 06/2020.' In sales, continuity in a territory is a quality indicator: show how long you maintained customer relationships. At the end of your experience section, add your willingness to travel, your category B driving licence, and the language regions you can manage independently.

How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed?

Two pages is the standard; a professional photo is still common in Switzerland and is even expected in sales.

Keep to a maximum of two pages, even with 15 years of experience. Summarize positions older than 15 years in a single line. Place your three strongest metrics at the top right or in a brief profile so a recruiter can recognize your sales strength within 20 seconds. Use a clean, ATS-readable layout without background tables, since many Swiss companies use Refline, Ostendis, or SuccessFactors.

An application photo is not legally required but is included in most cases in Switzerland. For Sales Managers: business attire, neutral background, friendly direct gaze, and a current photo. Add the details expected here: place of residence, year of birth, nationality or permit (B, C, G); marital status is optional.

Swiss conventions to keep in mind: write CHF amounts with an apostrophe (CHF 85'000), use the month/year date format, state language levels according to the CEFR, and mention references only upon request. Also adapt terminology to the job posting, since 'Sales Manager', 'Verkaufsleiter', 'Regionalleiter Verkauf', and 'Key Account Manager' describe different levels of responsibility in Switzerland. A brief salary reference does not belong in the CV, but at most in the cover letter if asked for.
