Which qualification counts as a Software Developer in Switzerland?
The main recognised qualifications are the EFZ as an IT Specialist in Application Development, a BSc in Computer Science from a university of applied sciences or ETH/EPFL – the classic Swiss path leads through vocational training followed by a vocational baccalaureate.
Always state your qualification using its official title: 'Federal Certificate of Proficiency (EFZ), IT Specialist specialising in Application Development' or 'BSc FHNW/ZHAW/HSLU Computer Science' with the relevant specialisation. Those who took the second educational pathway also list titles such as 'Dipl. Techniker/-in HF Informatik' (Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education, IT), 'Wirtschaftsinformatiker/-in mit eidg. Diplom' (Business Information Technologist with Federal Diploma), or a CAS/MAS from a university of applied sciences. These titles are protected and immediately recognisable to Swiss recruiters – a vague description such as 'computer science studies' will cost you points.
If you studied abroad, state the original title plus the Swiss equivalent, for example 'Dipl.-Inform. (FH), Germany – level comparable to BSc Computer Science', and refer if needed to a recognition statement from Swissuniversities or the SBFI. For developer positions, formal recognition is rarely mandatory, as the profession is not regulated; however, the classification helps HR staff without a technical background during screening.
Supplement your qualification with certificates that are genuinely required in the Swiss market: ISTQB CTFL, Professional Scrum Master I, Oracle Certified Professional Java, CKAD/CKA, Microsoft Azure Developer Associate or AWS Certified Developer. Add the year obtained after each one. Without a completed degree, weight certificates, a well-maintained GitHub or GitLab profile, and three to four concrete project descriptions more heavily than the education section.
How should I present work experience and projects as a developer?
For each role, describe the team size, domain, tech stack, and three to four measurable results – not the task list from your employment contract.
Start each role with a context line: industry, type of application, team size, methodology, and stack, for example 'Scrum team of 6, core banking solution, Java 21 / Spring Boot / Oracle, releases every two weeks'. Follow with bullet points showing impact: p95 latency reduced from 840 ms to 240 ms, test coverage increased from 41 to 84 percent, deployment frequency up from 2 to 21 per month, cloud costs reduced by CHF 148'000 per year. DORA metrics, lead time, change failure rate and incident numbers are the language technical hiring managers in Switzerland expect.
Separate your skills by level of proficiency rather than listing them in one long enumeration. A proven approach: languages and frameworks used daily, databases, cloud and operations, methodology (DDD, TDD, Clean Architecture, code reviews). Avoid percentage bars – they are unpopular in Swiss applications and convey no real information. If you have worked in regulated industries, specifically mention revDSG, FINMA requirements, eCH standards, Swiss Payment Standards (QR-bill), or HL7/FHIR in healthcare: this sets you apart from international applications.
Consultants and freelancers should group assignments under a single line, 'Self-employed Software Developer', and list three to five projects with duration, client industry (anonymised, e.g. 'Swiss retailer, 4'000 employees'), role and result. Finally, add links to a repository, technical blog or conference contribution – for developer profiles, a code sample replaces many adjectives.
How long should the CV be, and do I need a photo?
Two pages are standard, and a professional photo is still common in Switzerland, though optional – what is mandatory, however, is your place of residence, permit status and availability.
Keep the CV to two pages, or a maximum of three if you have more than ten years of experience. Order: contact details, brief profile (3 sentences), tech stack overview, work experience in reverse chronological order, education, certificates, languages. Shorten older positions to two lines. Save the file as a PDF with a descriptive name such as 'CV_Brunner_Nicolas_Software_Developer.pdf'; many Swiss companies use ATS systems that read single-column, text-based layouts cleanly – graphics with skill wheels do not.
A professional portrait photo is common in German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino, somewhat less so in the French-speaking part; omit it if you are applying to an international corporation with anonymised screening. Date of birth and nationality are not mandatory but are often included. If you hold a foreign passport, your status absolutely belongs in the header: 'Permit C', 'Permit B, employed without time restriction', or 'EU/EFTA citizen, permit-exempt' – this avoids follow-up questions and significantly speeds up screening.
State your availability and desired workload ('from 1 February or by arrangement', '80-100 percent') as well as your work location with commuting radius.
