What qualification do I need to become a System Administrator in Switzerland?

The classic path leads through the EFZ in IT (Systems Engineering) followed by the Federal Professional Certificate as ICT System and Network Technician.

In most job postings, the basic requirement is an EFZ as an IT Specialist in Systems Engineering or Platform Development, or alternatively an EFZ as an ICT Specialist with relevant practical experience. Those coming from a different profession can obtain the EFZ through a bridging qualification under Article 32 BBV. Always state the qualification using its official title and the school, so that HR staff can immediately gauge the level.

For managerial roles and demanding operational responsibility, higher vocational education is decisive: the Federal Professional Certificate as ICT System and Network Technician, the Technician HF in Computer Science, or the Federal Diploma of Higher Education as a certified ICT Manager. In Switzerland, these titles often carry more weight than a foreign bachelor's degree, because they combine practical experience with exam-tested knowledge. Spell out the title correctly, for example "Federal Professional Certificate" rather than just an abbreviation.

Vendor certifications complement the qualification but do not replace it. Currently in demand are AZ-104, MD-102, VCP-DCV, VMCE, RHCSA as well as Fortinet NSE or Cisco CCNA. Add the year so it is clear that your knowledge is current, and leave out certificates that refer to discontinued products.

If you hold a foreign qualification, provide a recognition or level assessment from the SBFI and specify your residence permit status, for example a B or C permit.

How do I structure work experience in the CV convincingly?

For each position, describe the managed environment in figures, followed by three to four results with measurable impact.

Start each position with a brief context sentence: number of users, locations, number of servers and VMs, storage volume, and operating model such as 24/7 or office hours with on-call duty. Without this information, no one can judge whether you managed a 30-person environment or a cluster with 200 VMs. Also mention whether you work on-premises, hybrid or cloud-first, and in which data center the data is held.

Phrase the bullet points as results, not as a task list. Instead of "Responsible for backups", write "Standardized the backup landscape on Veeam with immutable repositories, increasing restore success rate from 82 to 100 percent". Good metrics for System Administrators are availability in percent, RTO and RPO, patch compliance, number of tickets, device provisioning time, migration volume, and license or operating costs saved in CHF.

Show the range between operations and projects. Mention at least one migration or hardening project with a timeframe and your role in it, plus process knowledge from ITIL 4 such as Incident, Change and Problem Management. If you trained apprentices or organized on-call duty, include that too, since Swiss employers place high value on reliability in day-to-day operations.

How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed?

Two pages are standard; a professional photo is still customary in Switzerland and is usually expected.

Stick to two pages, or a maximum of three if you have more than ten years of experience. The first page should carry the profile, core competencies, current position and the most important certificates; summarize older positions in two lines. Avoid skill rating bars and instead name versions and years, for example "vSphere 7 and 8 since 2019".

A neutral portrait photo in the top right corner is still common in Switzerland, as is year of birth; marital status, on the other hand, is optional. Be sure to include place of residence, nationality or permit, category B driving licence for on-site assignments, and your language skills with CEFR levels. For positions with locations in Western Switzerland or Ticino, French or Italian skills are a genuine advantage.

Submit the application as a PDF with a clear file name, and attach references and diplomas, as is customary here. State your availability and notice period, often three months, and, if asked, a realistic salary expectation, for example CHF 95'000 to CHF 110'000 in the Zurich area. Tailor your profile and tool list to the job posting so that key terms such as Entra ID, Intune or Veeam are also picked up by applicant tracking systems.
