Which applicant tracking systems sort candidates with AI?

Updated:

In short

Of Swiss adverts whose system can be identified, about three in four run on software whose vendor markets AI matching: comparing an application against the advert's stated criteria and producing a fit score or a shortlist. Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, SmartRecruiters, Greenhouse, Workable, Abacus Umantis, Ashby, Recruitee and Join all market it in their own words. None of them markets automatic rejection, what they sell is the order a recruiter reads in.

Read that share carefully, because it is the part most articles get wrong. It covers the adverts where the system is visible, which is about two in five. Most Swiss adverts never reveal what sits behind the apply button, so across everything published the demonstrable figure is closer to three in ten. The rest is not proven human, it is simply not visible.

The practical consequence is narrow and it is the same in every system: these tools compare your document against the wording of one specific advert. The same experience described in different words registers as a weaker match, which is why one CV sent everywhere performs worse than a version written against each advert.

Share of adverts whose applicant system could be named, split by whether that vendor markets AI acting on candidates on its own website. Vendor pages read in September 2026. Adverts whose system is not visible are excluded, so this is a share of the identifiable part, not of the whole market.

  • Workable: «evaluates every inbound candidate against up to 14 job criteria, then messages them directly to verify interest, fill gaps and answer questions».
  • Workday sells «HiredScore AI», where «relevant talent is instantly surfaced»; SAP SuccessFactors sells «AI agents to intelligently surface top talent».
  • SmartRecruiters advertises «AI-Powered Candidate Screening»; Greenhouse sells candidate matching and a Voice AI first interview.
  • Ashby markets AI that surfaces «which applicants match your given criteria», and states plainly that the AI «never ranks or gives numerical ratings to applicants, a human must always be involved».
  • LinkedIn Recruiter: its Hiring Assistant «reviews thousands of applicants against your criteria in minutes, highlighting top candidates», and delivers «a summarized shortlist».
  • Prospective, the largest Swiss name in the data, is not a system at all: its own tool «lässt sich in bestehende Bewerbungsmanagementsysteme integrieren». Its apply links hand off, and a random sample of those hand-offs landed in Workday, Abacus Umantis, SAP SuccessFactors or Recruitee more than nine times in ten.

What the vendors actually sell, quoted from their own pages

Every claim below is the vendor's own wording, read on its own website in September 2026, not a summary from a comparison article, because those repeat each other and age badly.

The common shape is a comparison against the advert. Workable «evaluates every inbound candidate against up to 14 job criteria». Abacus Umantis compares the application «mit dem Stellenprofil» and returns a «Stellenfit-Score» within seconds. Ashby surfaces «which applicants match your given criteria». Workday «instantly surfaces» relevant talent through HiredScore. SAP SuccessFactors uses «AI agents to intelligently surface top talent».

What none of them advertises is throwing applications away. The marketed function is ordering, summarising and shortlisting, deciding what a recruiter sees first, not whether they see it. Ashby goes furthest in the other direction, stating that its AI never ranks numerically and that a human must always decide, and it has had the screening audited by a third party for bias.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. A ranking is not a rejection. But being ranked twentieth on a shortlist a recruiter reads ten of has much the same effect, which is why the wording of your application is worth the twenty minutes.

Why this makes a tailored CV the only reliable move

If the software compares your document against one advert's criteria, then a document written for no advert in particular is the weakest input you can give it. The system is not judging whether you could do the job. It is measuring overlap between two texts.

So an advert asking for Prozessoptimierung and a CV offering «continuous improvement» describes the same work and registers as a weaker match. The fix is not more keywords, padding optimises for the reader that sorts and against the reader that decides. The fix is using the advert's own terms for the experience you genuinely have.

That is an argument for a version per application, which is exactly the part people skip because it used to cost an evening each. Writing the advert's vocabulary into an existing CV is now a few minutes' work, and it is the single highest-value edit available before you send anything.

It is also the one edit that helps in both directions. The same specific, advert-matched wording that raises your position in the system is what a recruiter reads in the first ten seconds.

The Swiss twist: the biggest name is a distributor

The largest Swiss name behind these adverts is Prospective, and it is not an applicant tracking system. It is a Zurich recruitment-marketing company whose tool posts a vacancy to well over a thousand channels and, in its own words, «lässt sich unkompliziert in bestehende Bewerbungsmanagementsysteme integrieren».

Its apply links prove it: more than half hand off to the employer's own system rather than ending anywhere. Following a random sample of those hand-offs, more than nine in ten arrived in Workday, Abacus Umantis, SAP SuccessFactors or Recruitee, the employers behind them being large hospitals, insurers, the federal administration and the big professional-services firms.

This is why counting the address in the apply link understates the software. A Swiss careers page can look homespun and be a skin over an enterprise system, and a Swiss brand name in the address can turn out to be a postbox rather than a destination.

Shares come from our own analysis of the open Swiss adverts we hold, September 2026. For each advert the destination of the apply link was resolved and the system read from that address; where a link handed off, a seeded random sample was followed to its final destination and the result extrapolated, with the sampling error recorded alongside. The classification «markets AI matching» rests on vendors' own product pages read in September 2026, saved at the time. What an individual employer switches on inside a bought system cannot be seen from outside: vendor marketing is evidence about the product, never about a particular hiring process. Adverts whose system is not identifiable are excluded from the three-in-four figure rather than assumed either way.
