What is an alternative to assessment-centre training?

Updated:

In short

There are seven serious alternatives to paid assessment-centre training in Switzerland, and three of them cost nothing: SHL Direct's practice tests, a job-application course through the RAV (the regional employment office), and berufsberatung.ch. Add PrepLounge, a Toastmasters club, an English-language mock interview, and us. For the interview part we recommend SwissJobs.app — free with an account, CHF 15 a month or CHF 95 a year unlimited — because the cheatsheet is built from the actual advert. For the group exercise we are the wrong answer: that one needs other people in the room. Updated 28 August 2026.

Practise the interview out loud, and see how you scored

An AI panel asks the questions and you answer by voice, the way the real call goes. Afterwards you get a pass probability and the moments that cost you.

Start a live practice interview

The reason no single alternative covers the whole thing is in how a Swiss assessment centre is assembled. Swiss Assessment, the industry association that certifies these procedures, describes a group discussion as lasting "meist ½ bis 1 Stunde" — usually half an hour to an hour — and the in-tray exercise (Postkorb) as running "unter hohem Zeitdruck" with "15 bis 25 Schriftstücke", fifteen to twenty-five documents to sort, delegate and justify against the clock. On top of that come a presentation, a role play, a case study, a cognitive test and an interview. A paid training day bundles all of it; each alternative below covers one or two of those blocks, more cheaply and without an appointment.

One point matters more if you are applying from outside Switzerland than if you already live here: two of the free options are not open to you. The RAV route requires that you are registered as unemployed with a Swiss cantonal office, and the cantonal careers services behind berufsberatung.ch price by canton of residence. Everything else on this list works from Lyon, Milan, Munich or London exactly as it works from Bern. Every price below was read from the provider's own page on 28 August 2026; euro and dollar figures are converted at the European Central Bank reference rate of that day and rounded, so those franc amounts move with the rate while the Swiss ones do not.

  • assessment-center.ch, Zurich, read 28 August 2026: full training day CHF 2’980, senior leadership from CHF 5’940, interview training CHF 710, short assessment CHF 985, in-tray exercise CHF 89, hourly rate CHF 295. German only.
  • SHL Direct: free, more than twenty practice assessments from the test publisher itself, including a virtual assessment centre exercise. Not in every language, and no report.
  • PrepLounge: free basic tier with ten peer meetings, Premium EUR 79 a year (about CHF 74), Premium with coaching from EUR 199 (about CHF 186). Real practice partners, consulting-shaped.
  • Astra Consulting: CHF 450 for a mock interview plus a follow-up session, CHF 175 per further session, in English, aimed at students and graduates.
  • Toastmasters: "$72 USD for each six-month period" plus a one-time "$25 USD" fee — about CHF 116 a year and CHF 20 to join. Practises presentation and impromptu speaking in front of an audience.
  • RAV labour-market measure: normally free, the RAV decides on suitability, application at least ten days before the course starts — and only if you are registered in Switzerland.
  • Swiss Assessment describes the two blocks nobody rehearses alone: a group discussion of "meist ½ bis 1 Stunde" and an in-tray of "15 bis 25 Schriftstücke" under high time pressure.

Who to choose

The difference is not the tool, it is what the tool starts from: with us the advert is already there. You pick the job straight from our own Swiss job index — with ein Assessment-Center-Training in.

Choose SwissJobs.app if

  • Pick the job directly — We run the job index ourselves. The advert text is already loaded, and everything else is written against exactly that text — no searching, no copying, no pasting.

  • Four tools, not one — CV, motivation letter for the same advert, a CV check against that advert, and interview preparation — one account, the same data.

  • The RAV sheet — Your job-search efforts are filled from your application tracker and printed as the official SECO form. No other tool in this comparison has it.

  • Word export, no watermark — PDF and DOCX, both clean. Many tools hand you a text file on the free plan, or stamp a watermark on the document.

  • Start without an account — The tools open without signing up. The account is asked for to save and from the second document — the first download needs none.

SwissJobs.app

We are a Swiss job board with application tools attached, not an assessment trainer, and we are the right answer for exactly one block of the procedure: the interview. Paste the advert and your CV and you get a printable cheatsheet — twenty-four boxes, each pairing one requirement quoted from the advert with an evidenced answer from your own CV, plus a two-minute self-introduction, three strengths and a pacing plan for a forty-five-minute conversation.

Price: free with an account, subject to a weekly cap; unlimited at CHF 15 a month or CHF 95 a year after seven free days. It suits anyone with a few days between the invitation and the date who wants to prepare the substance of the conversation rather than read general advice, and it works the same from abroad — no Swiss address, no AHV number, no registration.

The limitation is large and we will state it first: the cheatsheet does not touch the group discussion, the in-tray, the presentation or the role play, nobody watches you perform, and you cannot practise a cognitive test here.

assessment-center.ch

This is the thing the question is looking to replace: paid one-to-one training run by Gabriele Trachsel, online or at Lake Zurich, in German. The site sets out its own promise as "Ich bereite Sie 1:1 auf Ihr konkretes Assessment-Center vor" — I prepare you one-to-one for your specific assessment centre — and aims at specialists and managers moving into senior and C-level roles.

Prices read on 28 August 2026: a premium training day CHF 2’980, senior leadership from CHF 5’940, a two-hour interview training CHF 710, a ninety-minute short assessment CHF 985, a seventy-minute management simulation CHF 295, and CHF 295 an hour for individual topics. The self-study items from the same house cost far less: an in-tray exercise at CHF 89, a business simulation at CHF 109 as an introductory price until 30 September 2026 and CHF 129 after that, and an online course at CHF 590 as a launch price, later CHF 649.

It suits a manager with a date in the diary and a role that justifies the outlay. Two limitations: the work is in German, which rules it out for a large share of the people reading this in English, and the "97 % Erfolgsquote" the site advertises is the provider's own figure about its own clients rather than an audited one.

SHL Direct

The least-known free route, and the one with the best argument behind it: SHL is one of the publishers whose tests you may actually be given. Its own support pages put it plainly — "SHL does not sell online or paper and pencil practice tests to candidates. However, we do have a selection of free practice tests available." SHL Direct carries more than twenty practice assessments: verbal, numerical, deductive and inductive reasoning, situational judgement, personality questionnaires, checking and calculation tests, and a virtual assessment centre exercise.

Price: nothing. It suits anyone facing an online test who wants to know how the item format, the timer and the interface behave before it counts. The limitation is one SHL states itself: the practice assessments "do not attempt to provide you with an exact experience" of the real thing, not every assessment or language has a practice version, not every practice test produces a report, and the material is essentially in English.

PrepLounge

A platform where you practise case studies with other candidates, taking turns as interviewer and interviewee. It is the only option on this list where a real person sits opposite you without a coaching invoice.

Prices on 28 August 2026: the basic tier is free and includes ten peer meetings, a limited case library and no video solutions. Premium is EUR 79 for a year as a one-off payment, about CHF 74, with unlimited meetings, two hundred cases, twenty video tutorials and two hundred drills. Premium with coaching starts at EUR 199, about CHF 186.

It suits consulting, banking and any procedure built around a case or a presentation to an audience — and it is genuinely useful from abroad, since the peers are worldwide. Limitation: the shape is management consulting, the language is English, and a market-sizing case does little for an assessment in nursing, public administration or retail.

Astra Consulting

The English-language human option, and the cheapest one in this list that puts a real interviewer in front of you. The package is two sessions: a realistic forty-five to sixty-minute mock interview built on an actual job description you are applying to, with immediate feedback, then a follow-up session reviewing your application and your performance. The audience is students and recent graduates chasing a first job or an internship.

Price, read on 28 August 2026: CHF 450 for the two-session package, CHF 175 for each further session. It suits somebody who has never sat a real interview and is facing a graduate assessment centre in English.

Limitation: it is a mock interview, not an assessment centre. There is no group exercise, no in-tray under time pressure and no cognitive test — and the graduate framing makes it a poor fit if you are a mid-career hire.

Toastmasters

The most obvious answer to "where do I practise speaking in front of people", and the one nobody lists. Toastmasters clubs meet across Switzerland — Zurich, Basel, Bern, St. Gallen, Lucerne, Zug, Winterthur, Geneva, Lausanne, Nyon and Vevey among them — and every meeting contains prepared speeches, impromptu speaking and structured feedback. Those are precisely the two assessment blocks you cannot rehearse at a screen: the presentation and the unscripted contribution in a group.

Price: international dues are "$72 USD for each six-month period" plus a one-time "$25 USD" new-member fee — at the reference rate of 28 August 2026, roughly CHF 58 per half-year, CHF 116 a year and CHF 20 to join. It suits anyone whose assessment is months rather than days away, and anyone facing a procedure in a second language: clubs running in English alongside German or French are normal in Switzerland, which is unusual anywhere else.

Limitation: a club is not a selection procedure. Nobody scores you against competencies, nobody simulates time pressure, and the rhythm is weekly or fortnightly — it works over months, not over one week.

The RAV course (arbeit.swiss)

If you are registered as unemployed in Switzerland, preparation runs through the labour-market measures and normally costs you nothing. arbeit.swiss is explicit about who decides: "Ob eine arbeitsmarktliche Massnahme geeignet und sinnvoll ist, wird grundsätzlich vom RAV beurteilt" — the regional employment office assesses whether a measure is appropriate. Anyone entitled to unemployment benefit already meets the participation conditions; people at risk of unemployment without that entitlement can be supported under conditions, in which case a contribution towards course costs is possible.

There is a deadline that catches people out: for courses and training placements the application must reach the RAV "mindestens 10 Tage vor Beginn der Massnahme" — at least ten days before it starts. An invitation on Friday for an assessment the week after next is already too late for this route.

It suits jobseekers with a little lead time who want supervised practice with others at no cost. Limitations: you are assigned rather than booking, the offer differs by canton, whether an assessment simulation is part of the course depends on the provider — and none of it is open to you if you are applying from another country.

berufsberatung.ch

The official portal, run by the SDBB on behalf of the cantons with federal support, free and without an account, in German with the French sister site orientation.ch and the Italian orientamento.ch. Its application pages run from the dossier through to the interview and treat the two as equally important — a tailored application dossier matters as much as thorough interview preparation, as the German page puts it.

It is worth the first half hour if you do not yet know what a Swiss procedure involves, and it also lists the cantonal careers services with their local fees. The limitation is decisive for this question: the assessment centre does not appear on that application page at all. There is no exercise, no drill and no simulator — orientation yes, training no.

Which one to pick

A date in the diary within a fortnight and a management role at stake: the paid one-to-one training, because only there does an experienced observer watch your behaviour and name what it looked like. A date in the diary and an ordinary budget: our cheatsheet for the interview, SHL Direct's free tests for the test block, and a single in-tray exercise at CHF 89 instead of a whole day.

No date yet, but the intention to move into a leadership role this year: Toastmasters for the speaking blocks and PrepLounge for the cases — together under CHF 200 a year, and more effective over months than one intensive day. Applying from abroad: skip the RAV and cantonal routes entirely, they are closed to you, and note that a graduate mock interview in English is likely to be more useful than a German-language training day you will half understand.

One argument against paying reflexively. An assessment centre measures behaviour under time pressure, and behaviour does not change by listening. What a training day earns, it earns because you perform and then hear how it landed. Any alternative that lets you watch instead of practise is the wrong one, whatever it costs.
