What qualification is expected for Store Managers in Switzerland?
The typical path leads through an EFZ in retail plus higher vocational education, such as the Federal Diploma of Higher Education as a Retail Specialist.
The typical basis is the Federal Certificate of Proficiency as a Retail Salesperson EFZ or a commercial EFZ. For branch management, employers usually expect further qualification at higher vocational education level: the Federal Diploma of Higher Education as a Retail Specialist, the Diploma as a Leadership Specialist, or the Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education as a Retail Manager. State these titles precisely and in their protected wording, as retail recruiters filter specifically for them.
If you hold a foreign qualification, add a note on recognition by the SBFI or state the Swiss equivalent in brackets. Your residence status is equally important: state clearly 'Swiss citizen', 'settlement permit C' or 'residence permit B with gainful employment', as staff scheduling in retail depends directly on this.
Leadership-relevant additional qualifications belong in their own section: vocational trainer course (a prerequisite for training apprentices), knowledge of the L-GAV Detailhandel in your canton, occupational safety under the EKAS industry solution, as well as hygiene training and HACCP if you are responsible for fresh produce or takeaway. These credentials distinguish you from candidates who only list sales experience.
How do I present my professional experience as a Store Manager convincingly?
Describe the branch context for each position and demonstrate your impact with retail KPIs rather than task lists.
Add two lines of context under each position: sales area in m2, number of employees and FTEs, number of apprentices, annual turnover in CHF, and your budget and P&L responsibility. A sentence such as 'Branch 780 m2, 22 employees, annual turnover CHF 8.4 million' immediately places your experience in the right size category - this is the decisive piece of information for regional managers.
This is followed by three to four quantified achievements. Use the metrics that are actually managed in retail: floor productivity in CHF per m2, average basket value, conversion rate from footfall measurement, units per transaction, stock turnover, markdown rate, inventory shrinkage as a percentage of turnover, staff cost ratio, staff turnover and NPS. Write CHF amounts in Swiss notation, i.e. CHF 8'400'000 or CHF 8.4 million.
Also show your leadership and project track record: recruitment and onboarding, sales coaching, shift scheduling in line with the footfall curve, refits and collection changes, Sunday sales and seasonal peaks, omnichannel topics such as Click & Collect or Ship-from-Store. Anyone who can demonstrate that they manage both figures and people gets onto the shortlist.
How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?
Two pages is the standard, a professional photo is common in Swiss retail and is usually expected.
Keep the CV to two pages: profile, at a glance with key figures, professional experience covering the last ten to fifteen years, education and training, languages, systems. Summarise older positions in a single line. As you are applying for a customer-facing and representative role, an up-to-date, friendly portrait photo in business attire is almost always an advantage.
Observe the Swiss dossier convention: employers expect a complete dossier with cover letter, CV, reference letters and copies of diplomas as a PDF, ideally in a single file with a clear file name. State your availability and notice period, along with your flexibility for evening, Saturday and Sunday sales shifts and your willingness to change branches within the region.
Adapt language and region: in Zurich or Bern, German is sufficient; in Geneva or Lausanne, apply in French; in Ticino, in Italian; in international retail chains, often in English. State your language levels according to the CEFR (for example, French B2) and mention understanding of Swiss German dialect if you come from abroad - in day-to-day sales at the point of sale, this is a genuine advantage.

Nadine Brunschwiler
Store Manager / Branch Manager - Retail Specialist with Federal Diploma of Higher Education
Store Manager with 9 years of experience in branch management in fashion and lifestyle retail, currently responsible for a sales area of 780 m2 with 22 employees and an annual turnover of CHF 8.4 million. I manage branches consistently through KPIs such as floor productivity, average basket value, conversion rate and staff cost ratio, and align staff planning with the L-GAV Detailhandel and cantonal shop opening hours. My strength lies in developing sales teams: over the past three years I have guided 6 apprentices to their EFZ qualification and promoted 4 employees to team leaders.
What sets me apart
KPI-driven management instead of gut feeling: Weekly branch dashboard with floor productivity (CHF/m2), conversion rate from footfall counting, average basket value and UPT; measures are translated directly into shift planning and increased conversion by 3.1 percentage points.
Staff planning in line with the L-GAV Detailhandel: Scheduling aligned with the footfall curve, compliance with rest periods, Sunday sales and overtime rules; reduced staff cost ratio from 14.8% to 12.9% without loss of service level.
Stocktaking and inventory shrinkage management: Rolling cycle counts, electronic article surveillance (EAS), till discrepancy checks and shoplifting-prevention training reduced inventory shrinkage from 1.4% to 0.6% of turnover.
Vocational training as a talent pipeline: As a vocational trainer, responsible for 4 apprentices training as Retail Salesperson EFZ; 100% pass rate in final exams, three permanent hires and two internal promotions to deputy positions.
Key achievements
Sales growth against market trend. Increased branch turnover from CHF 7.1 million to CHF 8.4 million in 24 months (+18%), floor productivity from CHF 9'100 to CHF 10'800 per m2.
Halved staff turnover. Reduced staff turnover from 34% to 16% per year through structured 30/60/90-day onboarding and monthly sales coaching; recruitment costs reduced by CHF 42'000.
Omnichannel rollout Click & Collect. Introduced Click & Collect and Ship-from-Store in the branch: 1'250 orders per month, 96% pickup rate, additional cross-selling turnover of CHF 310'000 in the first year.
