CV builder subscription traps: which tools bill fairly?
Updated:
In short
A tool bills fairly when three things are visible before you pay: the amount charged next, the length of the billing period, and the way out. On 4 September 2026 that was true of lebenslauf.ch (free, no login), bewerbung.ch («Keine automatische Verlängerung» — no automatic renewal), Novorésumé («Pay once. No recurring billing») and cvswiss.ch («renews monthly, cancel anytime in one click»). At Zety, LiveCareer and resume.io a trial priced under three euros or dollars is followed by 23.70 to 29.95 every four weeks. SwissJobs.app is CHF 15 a month after seven trial days, cancelled inside your own account.
The tools’ landing pages compared
All captured on 4 September 2026 at the same window width, so the comparison is fair.

Add your current CV and a Swiss advert, AI writes one tailored to it. Free to start, no signup.
If you have moved to Switzerland from the EU or the UK, the important part is not the prices — it is that your reflex about cancelling does not apply here. There is no general right to withdraw from a contract you signed online. Article 40b of the Swiss Code of Obligations lists the situations that carry a right of revocation, and a website is not one of them. Whatever a vendor promises voluntarily is therefore not an extra on top of the law; it is the whole of your protection.
The table below gives six facts per tool: what the free tier actually produces, the advertised entry price, what is charged after it, the length of the billing period, how you cancel, and what happens to your finished documents once you do. Everything comes from the vendors’ own pages, read on 4 September 2026. Foreign currencies use the Swiss National Bank’s monthly average for August 2026 — EUR 1 is CHF 0.94, USD 1 is CHF 0.81 — rounded.
What twelve months cost if you take the entry the pricing page offers first and never cancel. Prices read on the vendors’ own pages on 4 September 2026; foreign currencies converted at the Swiss National Bank’s August 2026 monthly average (EUR 1 = CHF 0.94, USD 1 = CHF 0.81). A four-week period produces 13 charges a year. A tall bar is not unfair in itself — not knowing about it is.
- SwissJobs.app — Free: editor without an account; with a free account five documents a day and ten per rolling week, but no download. Entry: seven trial days, card required. Then: CHF 15 a month or CHF 95 a year. Period: calendar month. Cancel: in your account under Manage subscription. After cancelling: documents stay and stay editable within the free limits, downloads stop.
- cvswiss.ch — Free: build and preview; the free download carries a watermark. Entry: CHF 5 once, «Credit never expires». Then: only if you take the subscription, CHF 15 a month. Period: month. Cancel: «renews monthly, cancel anytime in one click. No tricks.» After cancelling: a one-off credit does not expire. Plus a «7-day money-back guarantee».
- FlowCV — Free: «Free forever», «No credit card required», «No watermarks or branding», unlimited PDF downloads — for one resume and one cover letter. Entry: USD 60 a year, about CHF 49. Then: renews automatically at the end of each billing period. Period: year. Cancel: any time; refund within 14 days by emailing support. After cancelling: only your first resume stays editable and downloadable, other versions stay saved but locked.
- Novorésumé — Free: a single version, one page maximum, no cover letter. Entry: EUR 19.99 a month, 39.99 a quarter, 149.99 a year. Then: nothing — «Pay once. After it expires: «All the information will be saved in your account, even when the Premium period expires.» Refund within 14 days.
- Zety — Free: build yes, download as a text file only. Entry: EUR 2.70 for 14 days. Then: «After 14 days, auto-renews at 23,70 € billed every 4 weeks»; annual plan EUR 71.40, «Auto-renews each year». Period: four weeks. Cancel: in account settings, or through a cancellation-request form that asks for 1-2 working days. Cancel: «online, by email or call us toll-free» — the free number given is a US one. After cancelling: not stated on the pricing page. Its FAQ lists service numbers for the United States and Canada and for the United Kingdom — none for Switzerland.
- resume.io — Free: one resume and one cover letter, «Downloads only in TXT format». Entry: USD 2.95 for seven days. Then: «After 7 days, auto-renews to $29.95 billed every 4 weeks»; quarterly plan USD 49.95. Period: four weeks. Cancel: «you can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your plan at anytime from the app». After cancelling: not stated; there is a «7-day money back guarantee».
- Kickresume — Free: four templates. Entry: EUR 24 a month, 54 a quarter, 96 a year. Then: renews automatically. Period: the term you chose. Cancel: before the term ends. After cancelling: no refund — the pricing page advertises a «14-day money back guarantee», while the terms say «Subscriptions and one-off services are non-returnable. You may cancel your subscription, but no refunds will be paid on any remaining subscription period.»
- Enhancv — Free: a plan that expires after seven days and puts «Enhancv branding» in the document. Entry: the Swiss view shows Fr. 41.99, billed every three months. Then: the same every three months. Period: quarter. Cancel: not stated on the pricing page. After cancelling: not stated.
- lebenslauf.ch — Free: everything, «100% kostenlos», no login. Entry: none. Then: nothing. Period: none. Cancel: nothing to cancel. Note: the interface is German only, and the French URL serves the same German page.
- bewerbung.ch — Free: one template carrying their logo, three AI credits. Entry: CHF 20 for one month, CHF 50 for three. Then: nothing; every tile says «Keine automatische Verlängerung». Period: none. Cancel: nothing to cancel. Note: German only — /fr and /it both answer 404.
Who to choose
The other tools here are real and good at what they do — the table says what each is for. The reason we lead is one row in it: the job index is our own, so the advert is already there.
Choose lebenslauf.ch if
lebenslauf.ch — 100 per cent free and with no login at all, if a clean CV is enough and no account should be created.
Choose SwissJobs.app if
Pick the job directly — You choose the posting from our own Swiss index, and the CV, letter and check are written against exactly that text — no searching, no copying.
Four tools, not one — CV, motivation letter, CV check and interview prep from one account, on the same data.
The RAV sheet — Job-search efforts from the tracker, printed on the official SECO form. None of the other tools in this list has it.
Start without an account — Open it and write without signing up; the account is asked for to save and from the second document.
CHF 15 a month, seven free days first — Full access during the trial, cancel monthly, billed in francs — no four-week periods, no exchange-rate risk.

What «fair» means here — and why it is not the same as cheap
A subscription trap is rarely fraud and almost always an omission. The price on the button is real. The price that follows sits two lines below it in smaller type. The billing period is not called a month but four weeks. And the way out lives on a different page from the way in.
So this page does not rank prices. It ranks the billing itself, on three questions you can check in under a minute before you pay. Is the follow-on amount printed next to the entry price? Is the period a calendar month, or something that reads like one and is shorter? Can you cancel inside your own account without writing to anyone or calling? An expensive tool that answers all three bills more fairly than a cheap one that hides an answer.
A fourth question only becomes real later: once you stop paying, what happens to the documents you already made? It has its own section below, because the answer at nearly every subscription tool is the same — including ours.
Switzerland has no cooling-off period for online purchases
This is the part an international comparison page never covers, and it changes the whole question for anyone living here.
Swiss law regulates revocation in Articles 40a to 40f of the Code of Obligations. Article 40b lists exhaustively where the right applies: when the offer was made «at your workplace, in residential premises or their immediate surroundings», «in public transport or on public streets and squares», «at a promotional event connected with an excursion or similar occasion», or «by telephone or comparable means of simultaneous oral telecommunication». Ordering on a website is not on that list.
Two further provisions matter. Article 40a applies the rules only where «the customer’s payment exceeds 100 francs» — a trial priced at two or three euros is far below that, and so is a four-week charge of 23.70. Article 40c removes the right from anyone who «expressly requested the contract negotiations», which is a fair description of opening a pricing page yourself. Where the right does apply, Article 40e gives 14 days.
The practical consequence is a reading order, not a panic. Kickresume’s «14-day money back guarantee», resume.io’s «7-day money back guarantee» and cvswiss.ch’s «7-day money-back guarantee» are contractual promises, not statutory rights — and they extend exactly as far as the contract carries them. Kickresume’s own terms, in the same document as the guarantee, read: «Subscriptions and one-off services are non-returnable.» Both sentences can be true at once; the shorter one is in the advertising and the longer one in the contract. We explain what these documents say. For your own case, a consumer advice office is the right address, not a comparison page.
The exit route is the most honest number on any pricing page
How a vendor organises cancellation says more about its billing than any figure. Putting a cancel button in the account settings costs nothing; a company that does not do it has decided not to.
The route is shortest where it lives inside the product. cvswiss.ch prints «Abo: renews monthly, cancel anytime in one click. No tricks.» next to the price. resume.io answers it in its own pricing FAQ: «Yes, you can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your plan at anytime from the app.» On our side the button sits under Manage subscription in the account settings and opens the payment provider’s own management screen; the same page shows the date the subscription renews.
Zety runs two routes in parallel. Its cancellation page offers the account route first — direct cancellation, immediate confirmation — and below it a form for people who cannot log in, asking for an email address and an account ID, with the line «please allow us 1-2 working days». That this page is linked from the footer of every other page can be read either way: as service, or as a measure of how often it is looked for.
The longest route is LiveCareer’s. Under both paid plans the pricing page says «Cancel any time online, by email or call us toll-free» — and the toll-free number given is American. It is free from the United States; dialled from Switzerland it is not. Its own FAQ lists exactly two service numbers, one for the United States and Canada and one for the United Kingdom, with opening hours in US Central Time and GMT; there is none for Switzerland. monCVparfait, the French-language site of the same company — both footers read Bold Limited — names a French freephone number and a support address first, and only then mentions cancelling inside your account. For someone in Zurich or Geneva, the phone line is the worst of the three options, and it is listed first.
What happens to your documents when you cancel — ours included
This separates the tools more sharply than price does, and it goes against the whole subscription category, ours with it.
Zety asks you to tick a box before cancelling, confirming that you lose access to downloads, printing and emailing for your documents. monCVparfait — the French-language site of Bold Limited, the same company as LiveCareer — answers the same question at greater length in its FAQ: after cancellation your documents remain stored in your account and can still be viewed, but you can no longer download, email or print them. FlowCV is equally explicit: switch back to the free plan and only your first resume stays editable and downloadable, while other versions stay saved but locked.
We work the same way, and it belongs on this page: when a subscription ends, documents stay in the account and remain editable within the free limits, but PDF and Word export is tied to an active plan. Whatever you want to keep, download it before you cancel — with us as much as with them.
It is different only where no subscription is running. Novorésumé writes in its FAQ: «All the information will be saved in your account, even when the Premium period expires.» cvswiss.ch says a one-off credit never expires. And with lebenslauf.ch there is nothing to withhold, because there is no account: the file ends up on your own disk and the transaction is over.
SwissJobs.app
What it is: a CV and cover-letter generator that writes from the text of one specific job advert rather than from an empty template, then hands over full manual editing plus an AI prompt that changes the document on instruction. The editor opens without an account; generating from the advert and saving need a free account — an email address, no card.
What it costs: the free tier allows five documents a day and ten per rolling week, with a separate allowance on top for cover letters. The download is the paid action. Before it come seven free days, for which a card is stored; after them CHF 15 a month or CHF 95 a year. On the offer screen, above the payment form, it says that everything is included for the whole week and that cancelling beforehand costs nothing; further down, in small grey type, «Then CHF 15/month · cancel any time». Small print is small print, ours included — the difference is that the amount is the follow-on price of a calendar month, and that the account settings then show the renewal date. Cancel during the trial and nothing is charged.
Who it is for: people applying to Swiss adverts who want a separate dossier per advert, with the permit line, CEFR levels from A1 to C2, the workload as a Pensum in per cent and the two-page norm, plus PDF and Word export without a watermark and the RAV job-search-efforts form filled from tracked applications. Design comes from 54 variations (2 layouts x 3 fonts x 9 accent colours) — combinations of one Swiss format, not 54 designed templates.
The limitation, plainly: our trial renews automatically like everyone else’s. If you want a download without storing a card, we are the wrong tool — FlowCV and lebenslauf.ch give you one and we do not. And if you are writing exactly one application and never another, cvswiss.ch charges CHF 5 where we charge CHF 15.
cvswiss.ch
What it is: the closest Swiss competitor, with per-advert tailoring as its own headline feature and output in German, French, Italian and English.
What it costs: building and previewing are free; the free download is watermarked. CHF 5 once removes it for one document, and the same card says «Credit never expires» — a balance that does not lapse is the exception in this list. The subscription is CHF 15 a month, labelled «renews monthly, cancel anytime in one click. No tricks.», and the FAQ adds a satisfaction guarantee with a refund inside seven days.
Who it is for: for a single, well-made application, CHF 5 is the lowest price for an unwatermarked document we found anywhere — with the restriction printed on their own pricing page, that no edits are possible after download.
The limitation: the pricing is exemplary, but the one-off purchase and the subscription create two different expectations in one account. Anyone who believes CHF 5 has them covered permanently and then opens a second advert either pays again or moves onto monthly billing.
FlowCV
What it is: an editor whose free tier is meant seriously — «Free forever», «No credit card required», «No watermarks or branding», unlimited PDF downloads, for exactly one resume and one cover letter.
What it costs: USD 60 a year, about CHF 49, with no monthly option. The FAQ explains renewal without decoration: it renews at the end of each billing period at the renewal price unless you cancel first, and if you are unsatisfied within 14 days an email to support gets your money back.
Who it is for: anyone who needs one good CV and does not want to pay for it. This is the most honest free path to an unwatermarked document in this comparison, and it beats our own free tier, which does not include a download at all.
The limitation: switch back to the free plan and only the first resume stays usable, which is exactly the working pattern a Swiss job search needs — one version per advert. It is also an international resume layout with no notion of a permit line, a Pensum or Arbeitszeugnisse (the Swiss employer reference letters).
Novorésumé
What it is: an international CV editor with a template gallery, run from Copenhagen.
What it costs: EUR 19.99 a month, 39.99 a quarter, 149.99 a year — and, in the same card, «Pay once. No recurring billing». The FAQ repeats it as a question: «Will my Premium account renew automatically? No, our pricing model is not subscription based. Therefore, you will not be charged automatically without your consent.» Refunds within 14 days, and the data stays in the account after the period ends.
Who it is for: anyone who wants to buy a period rather than enter a relationship. Of every international tool here, Novorésumé is the only one where forgetting costs nothing — a genuine advantage over us, and it belongs said out loud.
The limitation: the free tier is tight — one version, one page, no cover letter — and the layout is an international resume format, which is the wrong shape for a Swiss dossier.
Zety
What it is: one of the largest international builders, with its own German edition at zety.de written for Germany.
What it costs: EUR 2.70 for 14 days — with «After 14 days, auto-renews at 23,70 € billed every 4 weeks. Cancel anytime.» directly underneath. The annual plan is EUR 71.40 and «Auto-renews each year». The full amount is therefore on the page; it is simply not on the button, and the period is four weeks rather than a month. On 4 September 2026 the page priced in euros in a browser session set to Switzerland.
Who it is for: anyone who wants a large gallery of designed templates at a low annual price. Take the annual plan instead of the 14-day entry and it works out at roughly CHF 67 a year — less than our CHF 95, and that is a point in their favour.
The limitation: the free tier hands over the finished CV as a text file only; the region switcher offers English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish and Portuguese editions, none of them Swiss; and the four-week period is why the advertised entry is the most expensive route through a year.
LiveCareer and resume.io
These two are the clearest examples of the pattern the question is about, and they are worth reading side by side because they differ in exactly one respect that matters.
Both open with a trial under three units of currency — LiveCareer EUR 2.95 for 14 days, resume.io USD 2.95 for seven — and both then bill every four weeks: EUR 23.95 and USD 29.95. Both state it, immediately beneath the price. Both restrict the free download to a text file. And a four-week period means 13 charges in a year rather than 12, which is what turns resume.io’s advertised route into roughly CHF 315 over twelve months, the highest figure in this comparison.
The difference is the exit. resume.io’s FAQ commits to cancellation inside the app and adds a «no questions asked, 7-day money back guarantee». LiveCareer lists «online, by email or call us toll-free» — with an American number — and says nothing on its pricing page about what happens to your documents afterwards.
Who they are for: someone applying in English, in a short and intensive burst, who will cancel in the same week. Both have far larger template galleries than we do. Neither knows what a Swiss dossier contains.
Which tool you should pick
If you are applying to Swiss adverts and want a separate version per advert, SwissJobs.app is the practical choice: documents written from the advert text in the Swiss format, in four languages, billed as a calendar month in Swiss francs and cancellable in the account.
If the recurring charge itself is what worries you, take a tool that cannot charge you: lebenslauf.ch (free, no account), bewerbung.ch (CHF 20 or CHF 50, no automatic renewal), Novorésumé (pay once) or cvswiss.ch at CHF 5. That is not a polite closing gesture — anyone who knows they will not reliably remember to cancel should not take a subscription at all, including ours.
If you need exactly one CV and want to pay nothing, FlowCV is the answer: free tier, no card, no watermark, PDF download included.
And if template variety is what you are after and you will put the renewal date in your own calendar, Zety’s or Kickresume’s annual plan costs less than our subscription. One rule covers all of them: download what you want to keep before you cancel. Afterwards it is usually still visible and no longer retrievable.
Everything about other vendors was read on 4 September 2026 on their own pricing, cancellation, FAQ and terms pages — zety.com and zety.de, livecareer.com, moncvparfait.fr, resume.io, novoresume.com, kickresume.com (pricing page and terms), flowcv.com, enhancv.com, cvswiss.ch, bewerbung.ch and lebenslauf.ch — and quoted verbatim where quoted. We opened no account and started no purchase there, so every statement about their flows comes from their public pages rather than from a checkout we walked. The price cards at Zety, LiveCareer and Enhancv are calculated in the browser and were therefore read in a real browser session set to Switzerland; Zety priced in euros, Enhancv in Swiss francs. Articles 40a to 40e of the Code of Obligations are quoted from the version in force on 1 January 2026 on fedlex.admin.ch, in the German original. Conversion at the Swiss National Bank’s August 2026 monthly average (EUR 1 = CHF 0.94, USD 1 = CHF 0.81), rounded. Our own prices, allowances and the 54 design variations come from the constants in our source and from the account settings, read on 4 September 2026; the account-free editor and the refusal to generate without a login were checked the same day on the live site.
